ℹ️ We weren’t sure what to expect at Great Sand Dunes National Park, but this episode had it all: a 4:25 AM wake-up call, a sunrise hike to the top of High Dune, cooling off at Zapata Falls, and a stop at the Visitor Center for our park stamp. Along the way, Trish nearly lost her positive attitude streak (the thumbnail says it all 😅).
Great Sand Dunes is one of the most surprising national parks we’ve visited. These are the tallest sand dunes in North America, surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Sunrise and sunset reveal incredible colors and shadows across the dunes, while the midday sun can wash it all out. If you’re planning a trip, we share what to do, where to stay, and how to make the most of your visit.
🌄 Things to Do at Great Sand Dunes:
Sunrise or sunset hike on the High Dune Trail / High Dune Loop
Explore Zapata Falls just outside the park
Try sandboarding or sledding down the dunes
Visit the Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center
Splash in Medano Creek in late spring and early summer
🏕 Where to Stay:
Pinon Flats Campground (inside the park, but book early!)
Great Sand Dunes Oasis
Zapata Falls Campground (great views of the dunes)
If you’re road-tripping Colorado, Great Sand Dunes pairs perfectly with Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Great Basin, or the Badlands. This is a park where timing matters—mornings and evenings are magical.
