I never used to enjoy plein air painting in watercolor. It was too easy to feel critical of my own efforts, distracted by the surroundings, people, bugs and weather, and vulnerably aware of my shortcomings.
That changed for me when I realized that sketching on location, plein air painting, could become a way for me to reverse my usual process of savoring my memories in the studio, and that I could make plein air painting suit my own intuitive approach and heart-guided watercolor style.
Plein air painting will help you when you make it a time of immersing yourself more fully in your environment; you are looking to slow time down and spend your energy in noticing your surroundings and experiencing them with all your senses. It's not about the painting as much as it is the investment of your attention!
My memories of place are stronger when I spend time painting what I see. Watercolor has made my life richer in so many ways, and this is one of the most important ones; letting go of outcomes and creating a process that is deep and slow and rich in meaning.
