TEDx Talks | A New Way to Think | Precious Babajide | TEDxYouth@RMSST @TEDx | Uploaded 3 days ago | Updated 1 day ago
In her TEDxYouth talk, Precious Babajide shared her unique experience of growing up as a Nigerian-American in Georgia. Born to Nigerian immigrant parents, she highlighted the duality of her identity, feeling caught between two worlds. In America, her favorite Nigerian foods were unfamiliar to most, while in Nigeria, her favorite American shows were unknown.
Babajide recounted her struggles with identity. This internal conflict was exacerbated by societal labels and cultural differences. Despite being labeled as black, she often felt disconnected from the typical African American experience, favoring Nollywood films over popular American movies.
She also discussed the challenges of communication within her family. While she understood Yoruba, she couldnt speak it fluently, a phenomenon known as receptive bilingualism. This condition, common among children of immigrants, affected her ability to fully connect with her relatives who spoke only Yoruba.
Babajide emphasized the broader implications of receptive bilingualism on mental and social health, particularly in forming relationships. She advocated for viewing this linguistic phenomenon not as a barrier but as a unique layer of communication that can foster innovation and collaboration. Through her talk, she aimed to shed light on the complexities of immigrant identities and the potential for new ideas to emerge from these diverse experiences.
Precious Babajide is a junior at Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology. Throughout her life, she has faced a unique phenomenon that initially made her feel isolated. Discovering that this experience has a name and is shared by millions has brought her a sense of community. Precious used her TEDxYouth talk as an opportunity to discuss this phenomenon and connect with others who share similar experiences. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
