In 1998, two essentially independent research teams discovered that distant supernovae (exploding stars) were fainter than previously predicted. Is the expansion of the universe speeding up rather than decelerating? Surprisingly, the current expansion rate that was recently measured with supernovae is higher than that predicted from observations of the young universe. Hear about exciting new physical explanations that are now being explored!
