Happy Valentine's Day! It’s Heart Health Month, so I want to give you an inside look at our Cardiology Service and introduce you to a French bulldog patient named Olive.
Olive is older now, but when she first came to see us she was a three-month-old puppy with heart issues. She initially received a balloon valvuloplasty (yes, that’s what it sounds like—inflating a mini balloon in her heart valve). That helped for a while, but then the issues returned.
Olive inspired the cardiology team to try something they’d never done before: placing a transpulmonary stent, or more simply put, a small mesh tube that's placed in a narrowed or blocked pulmonary artery.
These are human treatments that our faculty members are translating into animals to ensure that they have the same level of medical care as we do. We now routinely place transpulmonary stents, and we love seeing Olive thriving!
We provide cutting-edge cardiology care both here in Davis and at our satellite facility in San Diego. The majority of our patients are dogs and cats, but we regularly examine horses and exotic pets like birds, reptiles, small mammals and zoo animals. We’re here to keep your animal’s heart healthy!
