In the long grass of and open plain surrounded by mountains, two canines slept: an adult she-wolf and a young black and grey pup. The pup, Amarok, had been sleeping since early afternoon, but as midnight rolled around he opened is golden yellow eyes. The dark blue sky and sparkling stars.
"Omma," Amarok nudged the sleeping she-wolf with his paws, "Omma, wake up."
A groan was the response as Soul raised her head and yawned, "what's the matter lil' Rok?"
"The dots in the sky. What are they?" He asked.
Soul lifted her mismatched eyes to gaze at the sky. "Those are spirits," Soul answered, "subjects of the moon. The brightest of the spirits stay to guard the sky. But, every few generations, some spirits come down to give their power to certain youngsters. Pure hearts and gentle souls. Those youngsters grow up to protect their families from misfortune."
Amarok listened to every word, his eyes glistening with excitement and curiosity, when some stars shot across the sky caught his attention.
"What about them?" Amarok asked.
"Those spirits are returning to their home, having completed their purpose here," Soul explained, "tomorrow night, they will shine brightly, to continue their destiny: to guard the sky."
"Are you one of them?" Amarok asked, "you protect me from misfortune."
Soul looked to the sky, "no little one. I am not a Star Spirit."
