2100 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. is a Pinnacle Award-winning commercial interior project that blends architectural ambition with meticulous craftsmanship. Designed by Craig Copeland of Pelli Clarke & Partners, the building takes cues from Gaudi’s Casa Mila and New York’s Flatiron Building, using form and materials to create a welcoming, nature-inspired space. The interior features Turkish Dark Olive marble, with over 5,000 custom-cut pieces carefully dry-laid in Turkey during the pandemic. Each stone was chosen for tone, veining, and pattern to enhance the design’s flow. Challenges included crafting curved walls, solid stone steps, and a radial marble reception desk. Despite construction delays, the team overcame logistical hurdles with detailed planning and collaboration. Completed in 2022, the building now houses shops, cafes, and event spaces. Set at the edge of George Washington University’s campus, it invites the public into a warm, fluid space that fosters connection between nature and the urban environment.
