More than 75 years after Mighty Joe Young (1949) pushed the boundaries of what audiences thought possible on screen, an extraordinary survivor from the golden age of stop-motion animation is coming to Propstore.
This original 15-inch Mighty Joe Young animation puppet is believed to be the only complete surviving example from the landmark film, retaining its internal armature and the vast majority of its latex skin and fur. Recent X-rays have even revealed the sophisticated mechanical skeleton still intact beneath the surface.
Its significance goes far beyond the film itself. Mighty Joe Young represented the culmination of King Kong animator Willis O’Brien’s pioneering work and marked the emergence of his young protégé Ray Harryhausen. It remains the only completed feature on which the two stop-motion legends worked together, capturing a remarkable moment when one generation of visual-effects pioneers passed the torch to the next.
