Here's a quick overview of my latest fun side-project.
I decided to take a gamble and buy a FAKE Lego set from Ali Express. As a guitar player/collector/lover/refurbisher and now I also qualify for a 'builder', I really liked the idea of a true life size Lego guitar. I bought it relatively cheap at a discount price of only $ 94,-.
I have bought a Lego set from Ali Express before of an astronaut playing guitar on top of a small earth-like planet. And I have to say that that was my worst buy in my entire life. The set had nothing to do with Lego, the bricks were impossible to put together because they were too small to handle and the whole thing didn't even held together. Luckily Ali Express agreed with my disappointment and gave me a full refund.
With this guitar set though, luckily, it was a whole other story.
It came without a box, but al the separate bags were numbered with 1, 2 and 3 which made me exited to get started right away.
I immediately found out that the manual was very bad. It instantly reminded me of that previous horrendous set. Luckily these bricks were the correct Lego size so with a little bit of my own creativity I was soon on the right track. Building the frame of the guitar was a lot of fun and mostly easy to put together. But it was at the finishing up part where it just got really frustrating.
All of the smooth red, orange and yellow parts were part of the front of the guitar. Most of them were just blocks of 2 by 1's and I had to manually count them every time in order for it to properly fit in the correct places. One small miscalculation and you were forced to use a knife to take it apart again. For some reason it had a small compartment so that you could fit some weird Bluetooth Lego speaker in it... I can't think of any reason why you would want to do such thing, so I made sure that it wasn't going to be able to be opened once finished.
After finishing the build, I noticed that both of the pickups weren't perfectly centered compared to the bridge and the neck. Even though I triple checked for any chance of a mistake. But even in the manual, things weren't that beautifully centered as it should. So there I went, taking the center piece apart myself, hoping that I would be able to place it back again. Thanks to my own creativity I managed to replace both of the (humbucker) pickups to the location where they should have been in the first place. And that kinda completed the build for me... Until I realized that the pickguard was now completely in the wrong position because I reorganized the pickups. So I took the whole pickguard apart and placed it back on the guitar. And once again, I was proud of myself for making it look great!
Only thing left to do was to put some 'strings' on and then it should be ready to... 'Rock'?
The black nylon strings that came with the guitar were absolute garbage. So I replaced them with some rough black elastic bands. These were much better, as they were able to hold up any small tension. And as a nice little final touch, I stuck on a Gibson Les Paul logo on the headstock
And then, finally after roughly 10 hours (of which most of them were very frustrating hours) I finished the Lego Les Paul! Or did I..?
NOPE!
After looking at it a few times I got frustrated by the odd looking yellow bit on the left side of the guitar. It was supposed to look like that according to the manual and online pictures. But I hated it! It just looks weird. And so I took it apart AGAIN with my trusty old knife and creatively switched some yellow bricks with red bricks that were underneath the pickguard (smart move, I know!). Then I decided to glue on the elastic bands in the middle of the bridge thingy dinghies. And this time, for once, I decided that I was FINALLY satisfied with the end result and also very proud of this 'custom' build.
But this video was made BEFORE the big old NOPE part because I was so happy and proud of myself.
So there you have it. As far as I know this is the only video on YouTube about this (LEGO) guitar. And so I included this very informative description of 4157 characters. And I even wrote this at 4 am.
