Only 12% of the 50+ million people in the world who need palliative care annually are actually able to access it, according to the World Health Organization. At our next Medical Grand Rounds, we’ll be hearing from Sarah Nouri and Kara Bischoff to understand the drivers of disparities in access to palliative care services in the US and beyond. They will walk us through effective approaches to improve equity and inclusion in palliative care for patients experiencing chronic life-threatening illness.
Speaker
Sarah Nouri, MD, MPH is assistant professor and associate division chief for DEI in the Division of Palliative Medicine at UCSF Health. Sarah cares for people with serious illness in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. Her research is focused on achieving equity in access to high quality palliative care among racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse populations.
Kara Bischoff, MD is an associate professor and associate division chief for Outpatient Palliative Care in the Division of Palliative Medicine at UCSF Health. She provides palliative care to patients with a range of serious illnesses, including neurologic diseases, heart failure, chronic lung diseases, and cancer. In recent years, Kara has developed expertise in the provision of palliative care to people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), interstitial lung disease, dementia, and cirrhosis.
