Michigan just signed a law making the wood duck its official state waterfowl—and that’s more than symbolic.
Less than 100 years ago, wood ducks were nearly extinct. Unregulated hunting, commercial market demand, and widespread loss of wetlands and timber left them on the brink.
Then in 1918, Hunter conservationists banded together and passed the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
With protections in place—and boots-on-the-ground conservation from programs like the Farm Bill, the species made one of the greatest comebacks in North America.
This beautiful species went from near extinction… to totally recovered and thriving.
