Bruneau Sand Dunes State Park lies on the southern end of the Snake River Plain.
It was formed around 15,000 years ago from massive flooding due to global warming and glacial retreat. The flood, called the Bonneville Flood, produced a 400-foot wall of water that followed the path of the Snake River Canyon. Eagle Cove saw backwater eddying from this flooding which deposited tons of silt that became the sand dunes I had the privilege to visit. The largest dune sits 470 feet high. The dunes are not drifting due to prevailing winds along with vegetation surrounding two lakes.
This makes a perfect place to take your dog for a hike and maybe a chance to slide down a sand dune.
It is about an hour of easy driving from Boise and I plan to visit loads of times, once the 'rona dissipates. In the meantime, feel free to sit back and enjoy the vast open sand dunes.
