It has been some time since a book really tested my patience as much as ‘Villette’. By turns soppy and unmoored, this does an awful lot to detract from Bronte’s otherwise firmly secured reputation as a canonical necessity. Nobody in it drew me further in, and there wasn’t nearly enough great sentence work to rescue it!
