‘Felix Holt’ is a strange outsider in Eliot’s fiction. It doesn’t have the ruminative depth of ‘Romola’, it doesn’t pull us in with tenderness as ‘Silas Marner’ does, and it doesn’t fell us with its resolute superiority like ‘Middlemarch’ does. I can’t imagine what on earth dear nosey Mary Evans was doing at her desk in 1866!
