Can we have a society which is at once large-scale and free? Some people, the primitivists, think we can't and suggest we have to go back to a situation before 'mass civilisation' began in the agricultural revolution. Anarchists disagree, in fact the idea that we can live in peace en masse without the state was readily defended by anarchists in the 19th century against liberals and monarchists alike.
