'My company doesn't do that kind of work. Can I still bid it?' It's the question I hear most.
Most contractors think their company name is a fence around the work they can chase. You pour concrete, so you bid concrete. You hang drywall, so you bid drywall. Sounds reasonable.
Then a fire and safety company won a roofing contract.
Not a typo. A and A Fire and Safety took home a roofing award. The bidder who lost it was a fence company — Champion Fence, one of my clients. He priced it, built the bid, and submitted it — and didn't get it. But here's the part nobody talks about: the government never once asked what his sign said.
The government doesn't buy your trade. It buys an outcome — a roof that gets replaced, on schedule, at the price you promised. Find the subs, price the scope, manage the work. If you can do those three things, you're qualified to compete.
Here's the uncomfortable part: nobody teaches you how to bid work you've never performed. So I built it into the workshop. Day 2 is a VFD job — and I walk you through pricing it when you've never touched one in your life.
Every job you sit out because 'we don't do that' is money you handed to a competitor. If you want to see what your company can actually bid, book a Zoom at gcexperts.com/zoom and I'll show you.
