When you walk around Brooklands Museum (as shown on Secrets of the Transport Museum), you may marvel at some of the larger aircraft and wonder how did they get to the museum? Well, you may be surprised to know that most came by road, only 4 arrived by actually flying into Brooklands. Except for the Vickers Wellington R for Robert, I was involved in some small and often large way in getting them all into Brooklands usually by transporting all or part of them by road.
The list includes both Hawker Hunters, the Varsity WF372, the Viking G-AGRU, Viscount G-APIM, Hurricane Z2389, Sopwith Camel B7270/G-BFCZ, Vimy NX71MY / G-EAOU, the Swift WK198 and Concorde.
Also, cockpits sections - Vanguard G-APEJ, Viscount XT575, VC-10 [Test Specimen], TSR2 (Test Specimen). Plus, these ones no longer at Brookland including Britannia G-ANCF, 3. Beagle 206 G-ARRM, Beagle Pup G-AVRF, Tiger Moth DH82A, Hurricane BE417 / G-HURR, Grumman Widgeon G-BTKJ
I became a volunteer at Brookland in 1984 just after National Rescue the company I owned moved onto the adjoining Brooklands estate. We were soon approached about collection various cars (for free of course), then one day Julian Temple (curator of aviation at the time) told me about this Varsity in Cambridgeshire. He ended the conversation by pointing it out the transporting it by road was not possible, needless to say ‘I bit’ and said “bet we could do it”.
I had always filmed the more interesting vehicle accidents we dealt with, for staff training, and so when I could, I also recorded many of the aircraft recoveries we did. More often than not it was my ex-London Transport AEC Militant mobile crane called Milly that did the recoveries. When I retired from National Rescue, I loaned Milly to Brooklands where she stayed until she also retired in in 2024. During that time, she has worked on just about all the Brooklands Aircraft ranging from fitting engines to putting Concordes nose on. Today she is still at Brooklands but now living in the Bus Museum.
