2025 was a fantastic year to be a gamer.

This Retro Rivals Year in Review celebrates a year packed with games that clicked — across genres, consoles, and modern and retro experiences. Every session felt engaging, surprising, or just plain fun, and it was impossible not to smile while playing.

From vibrant platforming like Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, to story-driven adventures like Shadow Hearts, to modern favorites like Alan Wake 2 and Kena: Bridge of Spirits, this year was a joyful mix of everything Jenn loves about gaming.

There are some charts and playtime notes sprinkled in, but mostly this is about the games themselves — the highs, the surprises, and the ones that lingered long after the credits rolled.

This isn’t a ranking. It’s a celebration of a year where gaming worked perfectly.
