This brought her to the realisation that Madge was her mother. Val, as seen in the extract, was also onto the story having read Madge’s letters. The girls now knew the truth. Peggy got to know her real siblings as siblings and was immediately at ease with them. Equally Val went to see her real parents and immediately felt at home. The real loser from this was Madge who had striven for so long to correct the hospital error. Peggy retained her feelings for the parents who had brought her up. It was Fred, the father who brought her up, who gave her away at her wedding. Meanwhile Val had always known that Madge treated her differently and was now more attached to her real parents, Fred and Blanche. In a way, Madge lost both daughters; the one she brought up and the one that really was her daughter.
