Autem Apartment | Felipe Hess
Located in Jardins, São Paulo, Autem Apartment is a complete renovation of a duplex designed by Felipe Hess Arquitetos for a young couple. Defined by restraint, spatial clarity, and meticulous detailing, the project transforms the residence through a carefully orchestrated sequence of spaces, materials, light, and furniture.
The lower floor is organized around a symmetrical circulation axis that culminates in a dramatic double-height living room, while a generous metal spiral staircase connects the two levels and becomes one of the apartment’s defining architectural gestures. Continuous wall panels conceal functions such as the kitchen, wine cellar, and office, allowing the interior to be perceived as a series of clean, abstract volumes rather than individual rooms.
Materiality plays a central role. Light travertine is contrasted with dark wood, while natural fabrics, woven textures, brass, and carefully filtered light create a sophisticated yet restrained atmosphere. Architecture and interiors are conceived as one, with a highly considered selection of Scandinavian and Brazilian furniture, including pieces by Peter Hvidt and Jorge Zalszupin, extending the architectural language into every detail.
Light itself becomes an architectural material throughout the project. Curtains, vegetation, screens, and indirect lighting soften the abundant daylight entering the glazed building, creating different atmospheres from morning to evening and giving each space its own sense of intimacy.
In this film, we take a poetic and cinematic journey through Autem Apartment, accompanied by an in-depth interview with architect Felipe Hess. Moving between its double-height spaces, spiral staircase, intimate rooms, filtered light, rich textures, and carefully curated furniture, Hess reveals the ideas and decisions behind a project where sobriety is not about simplicity, but about precision. The result is a closer look at how architecture, interiors, light, and furniture come together as a single, cohesive experience.
