A Dilemma in Bayesian Chronology Construction, a talk by Bryony Moody (University of Sheffield)
In the 1990s, Bayesian modelling revolutionised chronology construction for archaeological sites because it allowed the simultaneous interpretation of both relative and absolute dating evidence. However, for this process to work well, we require both the model inputs and the structure of the model to be both archaeological and statistically appropriate for the situation we seek to represent. This talk will explore what happens when we use models and model inputs that seem sensible from an archaeological perspective but have undesirable statistical properties. I will discuss previous work that addressed some of these problems and introduce current research seeking to tackle others.
