In the StarTrek series the starship Enterprise had invisible shields to protect it. The earth has a real invisible shield, our magnetic field, that protects us from intense, harmful radiation from the sun. Without it, life on earth could not exist. But earth's magnetic field is decreasing, wearing down so quickly that we know the earth could not be more than 20,000 years old.
