In 1988 archaeologists discovered an extraordinary 4th-century AD infant burial in the town of Baldock in Hertfordshire. The finds included a clay figurine of a nursing goddess - the so-called 'Dea Nutrix' - who is depicted sitting on a throne with two babies on her lap.
