A crisis in law making? The case of assisted dying Part 2 The Q&A Battle of Ideas Festival

This session examines widespread concerns about how major UK laws are increasingly being introduced with limited scrutiny, using the Assisted Dying Bill as a central case study. The Bill was pushed through via a private members’ bill, with obfuscating technical procedures, supportive committees, disproportionate pro-Bill testimony, and rushed debates, despite its profound implications for the state, individuals, and the NHS. Is this an example of democratic debate being bypassed and parliamentary oversight eroding through fast-tracking, statutory instruments, and Henry VIII powers? This panel share their insights and expertise and reflect on what is going on with a highly engaged audience.
