If you find yourself in Switzerland in September, get ready for cows in headdresses. 💐🐮 The tradition is called Alpabzug: the annual walk down from high mountain pasture before the snow closes the routes, and that crown is not decoration.
The flowers are a report card. A cow crowned in blooms and an oversized bell means the herd made it through the season without losing an animal. A plain wreath, or none, reads to everyone in the village the same way: something went wrong up there. Nobody has to say it out loud.
Villages turn the return into the event of the season. Markets open in the square, cheese and sausage change hands, brass bands follow the cows in. It looks like a parade. It is actually payroll, insurance, and inventory, walking itself home. 🇨🇭
