Step inside the friendship of two artists at the heart of the Impressionist movement: Édouard Manet (1832–1883) and Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). Explore their mutual influence and inspiration as colleagues and collaborators, painter and model, collectors of each other’s work, and, following Morisot’s marriage to Manet’s brother, family. Complementing the exhibition "Manet & Morisot," and addressing several works in our permanent collection, this lecture is delivered by Emily A. Beeny, a Manet specialist, and the exhibition’s originating curator.
About the curator
Emily A. Beeny is chief curator of the Legion of Honor and Barbara A. Wolfe Curator in Charge of European Paintings at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Since joining the Museums in 2021, she has spearheaded a series of major paintings acquisitions and overseen the reinstallation of the Legion’s Baroque galleries. A specialist in French paintings and drawings of the 17th–19th century, she received her PhD from Columbia University and has held curatorial appointments at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Norton Simon Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

This program is part of our “A Closer Look” series, a new curatorial lecture series exploring both the development of the Museums’ distinct collections and their art historical significance. Beginning at the Legion of Honor and expanding to the de Young soon, the series features in-depth presentations that highlight collection gems while demystifying creative practices that span thousands of years.

Le peintre français Jules Tavernier (1844-1889) était l’un des plus talentueux de l’Ouest américain grâce à un don naturel que beaucoup estimaient inégalable. Ses studios de San Francisco et de Monterey sont devenus lâme de la toute jeune scène artistique de Californie. Cette présentation virtuelle de Claudine Chalmers, historienne indépendante et auteure de Jules Tavernier: Artist and Adventurer, se penche sur sa vision de lart, sur ses tableaux, et sur limportance quil donnait à l’atmosphère productive du studio d’art, une vision qui a fondamentalement influencé celle de nombreux autres artistes californiens. Le Dr Chalmers nous guidera à travers son parcours et la formation qui a forgé son identité en tant que peintre français, ses partenariats productifs avec d’autres artistes Français comme Paul Frenzeny et son lancement de Monterey en tant que destination pour la peinture en plein air.
