I first saw Bill Malone do this in one of his On The Loose DVD's. I'm sure it's much older than that but I'm not exactly sure where else it has been published. Let me know if the comments if you have any more info on this method.

The Thumb Fan is one of the prettiest ways to display a pack of cards. When done properly the cards should be spread out evenly in a beautiful semi-circle shape, and the fan can even be closed with one hand in a slick fashion.
This video is a sample from The Foundations of Card Magic training course. I taught the Thumb Fan on the channel several years ago, but this is a much higher quality tutorial for you.
