Dr. Janet Hering, PhD ‘88:
Since 2023, Janet Hering is Director Emerita of the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science & Technology (Eawag) and Professor Emerita at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ) and Lausanne (EPFL). Prior to moving to Switzerland in 2007, Prof. Em. Hering was a faculty member at Caltech and UCLA. She is a former Associate Editor of Environmental Science & Technology and former member of the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science. She is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and Academia Europaea.
Ellen Swallow Richards was a pioneer in assessing water quality and tracking its degradation by human activities. Sadly, similar problems still challenge us today. Solving them will require advances not only in water science and technology but also more effective cooperation between researchers and stakeholders so that actionable research addresses critical needs and is rapidly taken up into policy and practice. The barriers presented by conventional academic incentives must be overcome if academic research institutions are to contribute more effectively to addressing the world’s pressing environmental problems.
