A few days ago, we were filming for the BluePlanet series with Carnatic musicians Ramakrishnan Murthy, RK Shriramkumar, Guru Prasad and NC Bharadwaj near tide pools in Anjuna, Goa. Caught in the midst of unseasonal rains and high tide, the reality of Climate Change was sharply brought home to us.
As we went about setting up and trying to change location at the site, we were lucky to meet Nandini Velho, wildlife biologist and coordinator of the successful Amche Mollem (My Goa) environmental grassroots Campaign which brought citizens together to protest the destruction of the old forests and National Parks in Mollem, Goa. Joining her was visual artist and coordinator of the campaign Nishant Saldanha who is also leading the initiative to create posters for all 21 concerts in the Blue Planet series each drawn by a young artist based in Goa.
Nandini and Nishant explain how the worlds of Indian classical music and the ecological issues they work with are not that different after all and why environmental action is the concern of everybody and not just NGOs and environmental groups.
Also congratulations to the Amche Mollem teams for winning the Sanctuary Wildlife Service Award 2021!
