As records were lost over time, the identity of the man in this portrait was a mystery for generations.
Recent research has brought us one step closer, identifying the sitter as possibly Peter Vogelsang Sr., a prominent member of New York’s free Black community and connected to one of the most influential Black families in early American history.
Inspired by that discovery, filmmaker @yectorharold imagines what it might look like if Vogelsang could direct his own portrait today.
