CoffeeCup StudiosWhy physical video games hold more value than digital downloads. Rediscover the specific nostalgia of collecting game cases.
There was a unique ritual to buying physical video games that modern digital storefronts simply cannot replicate. Walking into a shop to pick up a case, reading the back, and admiring the artwork created a tangible connection to the experience. For many, owning physical media is about more than just playing; it is about preserving a piece of gaming history on a shelf.
This shift toward digital-only libraries has changed how we interact with our collections. Unlike digital files, physical video games can be traded, sold, or lent to friends, ensuring that these titles remain accessible long after the initial hype fades. Retro gaming fans often find that rediscovering a forgotten world is easier when you have the actual video game cases in your hands. Whether you are a long-time enthusiast of game collecting or just curious about why physical vs digital debates matter, protecting your physical collection ensures you can always load up an old console and return to those cherished memories.
Sony says this decision reflects the growing preference for digital media. For players, however, it raises a much larger question:
Are we approaching the end of truly owning video games?
Do you still buy physical games, or have you already moved completely to digital? Let me know which physical game in your collection you would never sell.

#Pokemon #PokemonGold #Gen1RecompWhat If Nintendo Made Pokemon Gold Like This?CoffeeCup Studios2026-08-08 | I'm remaking Pokémon Gold & Silver from scratch in Unity — rebuilding the Johto region as a fully explorable 3D voxel world.
After recently playing Pokémon Yellow through Gen1Recomp with the incredible 3D voxel mod, I got the motivation to return to a project I originally started in 2025: reimagining one of my favourite childhood Pokémon games in my own voxel style.
This project recreates the nostalgic feel of the original Pokémon Gold from my childhood but within a modern 3D voxel world environment. I re-created original assets using MagicaVoxel, including classic Pokemon sprites and character models, giving the pixel art a new dimension.
Rather than simply recreating the original game visually, I'm also experimenting with how a 3D version of Johto could actually play — including freely roaming Pokémon, third-person exploration and a catching system inspired by Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
Playing Gen1Recomp and seeing Pokémon Yellow transformed into a beautiful voxel world reminded me just how much potential these classic Pokémon games still have when viewed from a completely new perspective.
Subscribe for weekly game development updates, and let me know in the comments which classic town you want to see rendered in 3D next.
This is only Part 1.
There is still an enormous amount of the Johto region left to rebuild, Pokémon to model, not to mention a battle system to program and mechanics to recreate — so if you'd like to follow the project, subscribe and join me as I continue rebuilding Pokémon Gold & Silver in 3D.

#PlayStation #PhysicalGames #GamingIs Xbox Dead? The Truth Behind The ClosuresCoffeeCup Studios2026-07-14 | Xbox used to be one of the strongest brands in gaming.
From Halo, Gears of War and Xbox Live to Game Pass, Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, Xbox should have been in one of the most powerful positions in the entire industry.
But a series of poor decisions led to Studio closures, layoffs, cancelled projects, a Game Pass price hike, multiplatform confusion and an unclear console identity have left many players asking the same question:
What is Xbox now?
In this video, we look at the Xbox story as more than just one company struggling. Xbox has become a case study for what is happening across modern AAA gaming — bigger budgets, bigger acquisitions, bigger services, but often less identity, less risk and less creative soul.
This isn’t just about Xbox falling apart.
It’s about what Xbox reveals about the modern gaming industry.
And as a game developer myself, I think this also explains why so many players are turning back toward focused, creative, passion-driven games from smaller teams and indie developers.
Has Xbox lost its way, or is this simply the future of gaming?
Let’s talk about it.
#Xbox #Gaming #GameDevHave Video Games Lost Their Soul?CoffeeCup Studios2026-07-01 | Has the golden age of gaming really died?
In this video, we look at why so many modern AAA games feel like they’re missing the passion, identity and soul that defined many classics from the 90s and 2000s.
From Metal Gear Solid, Half-Life, BioShock, Oblivion, Fallout, Skyrim and F.E.A.R., older games often felt like complete experiences where story, gameplay, level design, sound design, atmosphere and player rewards all worked together.
Today, many games are bigger than ever — but do they actually feel better?
We’ll look at how storytelling changed, why gameplay and narrative often feel disconnected, how level design became less memorable, why sound design mattered so much, how poor optimisation became normal, and how real in-game rewards were slowly replaced by deluxe editions, battle passes and paid cosmetics.
This isn’t about saying great games no longer exist. They do.
But when you compare the identity of classic games with the current state of the gaming industry, it raises one important question:
Has the golden age of gaming really died?
#gaming #gamedev #videogamesModern Games Still Cant Match This AICoffeeCup Studios2026-06-23 | What if one of the smartest enemy AI systems in gaming was created nearly 20 years ago?
Despite massive advances in graphics, hardware and game development, many modern shooters still struggle to create enemies that feel truly intelligent.

Call of Duty: World at War wasn't difficult by accident. Treyarch deliberately made the game feel more intense, chaotic and unforgiving than previous Call of Duty games.
