There were entire different versions that were discarded, with a lot more action of the building toppling over, but that in the end were unnecessary for the required story beats.Layout involves a bit of animation, lighting, editing, modeling, and a lot of composition and good use of camera for a clear narrative. Sometimes we follow what is indicated in the storyboards, sometimes we break away from it entirely and come up with our own beats and ideas, it's a very creative endeavor.The process works somewhat like this: We layout artists receive the storyboards in the form of a movie, cut by the editor. We need to build up the first 3D representation of that storyboard, in a full cinematic form, by using the characters, sets and props created by the modeling department. We animate the characters (roughly, not very cleanly, it's all about efficiency and iteration), we sometimes model our own sets and props when they don't exist yet, we place some temp effects and lights, and most importantly, we make the choices of camera and composition.What lens frames this shot better? What f-stop? What type of camera move expresses the right feeling and emotion? How do the shots cut together? Should we add shots for clarity, or combine or remove shots that are unnecessary? What angle showcases the right attitude? How can we stage the characters in the frame to tell the story better? Are we showing this story from the right point of view? It works though, but it needs a very constant wind and even force through the whole circle.

Because the tapes are magnetic, the audio and video got blended and corrupted and it became a transdimensional, hellish nightmare.I made this cut, using only the original sound, no transitions or blends. Purely clean footage as it came out of the tape.Beautiful childhood.

After playing it, I wanted to make my own puzzle, and use the theme of starting on a circle and moving through a line that ends on a rounded end. In this case, however, you need to trace 4 of those paths over a sphere at the same time. I also borrowed some of the iconography from the game (hexagons, tetris blocks, branching trees, etc) and placed them as clues on the tetrahedrons in case you get lost, they imply different step numbers for solving the puzzle.

Each tetrahedron contains a small clue as to which steps in the sequence it needs to be activated at. Once the tetrahedrons line up in their spots, the top triangle of the sphere opens.
Caving at The Catacombs Joaquín Baldwin 2015-09-27 | I went caving to the very end of the longest cave at the Lava Beds National Monument, in northern California. The Catacombs is a tricky, very tight and confusing lava cave, with very stabbing spikes on top, cauliflower-like sharp floors, and a labyrinth of paths to discover.We explored many more caves in the park; Catacombs is the deepest, but there are a lot of varied types of caves with unique formations in the area (over 800 actually, but about 20 or so are easily accessible to anyone).I highly recommend a visit to this park! There are a ton of easy caves too, just walk in with a flashlight, and explore, no need to get down or even duck in a lot of them.
Scintillaris Joaquín Baldwin 2015-09-08 | A pearly necklace of stars is plucked out of the glowing Milky Way band in the sky.4K video. To properly expose the Milky Way, this film was shot with long exposures, holding each single pose for 15 seconds at a time, over the course of three hours, with no breaks.Animating with my actual body, I don't think I've ever felt so much like an animator, I had to think about the position of every limb and focus on each pose. I held every pose for 15 seconds, sometimes with a strong wind blowing against me and my props, while Timothy checked the camera and read the exposure sheet out loud to keep me on track.This was a fascinating experience, and my whole body ached from the yoga-like work and lack of sleep. I saw plenty of meteors that night, sometimes I had no choice but to hold my head up and stare at the stars, it was like a very long meditation.This type of animation is called "pixilation", but it's normally shot instantly like regular photographs, instead of holding long poses for many seconds at a time.I'm putting this film up under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial License.Please share!
