$Best of EASD 2025 by the EASD Early Career Academy – featuring Dr. Michael Leutner In the seventh episode of our highlights from the EASD Annual Meeting 2025 in Vienna series, Dr. Michael Leutner from the Medical University of Vienna, Austria shares insights from the SOUL Trial which investigated the effects of oral semaglutide on cardiovascular outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes. Michael Leutner explains the design and baseline characteristics of the SOUL Trial and presents the main outcomes regarding heart failure and peripheral artery disease. Main trial outcomes for heart failure include: - Oral semaglutide reduces heart failure events or cardiovascular death in people with type 2 diabetes with a history of heart failure compared to placebo. - Benefits were strongly observed in trial participants with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), with no safety concerns identified in this group - Positive effects were observed regardless of the high baseline use of SGLT-2 inhibitors or mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists - No increased risk of serious adverse events Main trial outcomes for peripheral artery disease include: - Oral semaglutide reduces major adverse limb events, including acute limb ischemia and chronic limb ischemia #easd2025 #Diabetes #Type2Diabetes #HeartFailure #CardiovascularDisease #ClinicalTrial #DiabetesResearch$
