It’s about a tree I’m painting in watercolor at the moment (a really detailed job), the birds in our garden and my disappointment in the Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelle watercolor pencils. I’ve worked with them a bit after the very first impression and I haven’t warmed up to them yet.

It was lovely meeting him and talking about watercolor and pigments and when I was there, he gave me a new set of his watercolor paints: The Urban Sketching Box of 12 half pans. In this video I talk about the meeting and about this wonderful set of paints that I’m sure any sketcher – urban or landscape – would love. Disclaimer: I’m in no means affiliated, nor paid to do this video. I simply like to share my experience with paints and that is not tainted by any reward system.

Today I have a little video for you...short and little in other ways too. I did it for a zine invitation by Ana Goldberg who's also got a Patreon, and a YouTube, by the way. For personal reaons she had to leave behind many things dear to her. Hence the theme for the zine: "Our most cherished items and why we keep them". In this video I share about mine.
Also, this video is a sneak preview on an illustration style I'm working on and building new visual language for. And...I colored this one digitally...practising a bit as digital drawing is very helpful these days.
I hope this video finds you well and if you're in the European heat wave like me, hold on! Tomorrow it will better.
And do let me know what you think of this illustration style. I'm SO curious....
Oh, and before I forget...Ana Goldberg's links in case you're interested:

Learning about it theoretically is one way to approach it, but experimenting with it A LOT, is probably the best way to learn and to get a feel for it. As you can see in this video, often we don't even know WHY a certain composition works for us. We just feel it does. Until we sit back and try to analyze it. Then something logical comes up that we can learn from.
What I like to do, is to do these composition exercises in between painting my treeworlds, for example. Little as they may seem to have to do with one another on first glance, in fact, these composition exercises I often find processed in my watercolor paintins later.
All paints used are from my ideal watercolor set, mostly consisting of Royal Talens Rembrandt paints, along with Daniel Smith and Schmincke Horadam. You can find a video about the composition of this set here: youtu.be/9DTFGNj4-mc
Roman Szmal Aquarius watercolorpaint is available in the Netherlands through www.kunstburg.nl
For worldwide availability of the Roman Szmal watercolor, please google or contact Roman Szmal on facebook. I know Jackson Art sell them as well as Peters-Art.de.

Something went wrong with this video, so I'm uploading it again, sorry if you can't find your reactions to it. They probably went down with the video. I made a mistake in the app. My video was mentioned twice there and I removed the top one, thinking it had uploaded double. Sorry...
Thus far I haven't felt I missed out very much, except for one little thing I need to solve: get my friends' phone numbers for text messages. Other than that there is a humongously thick brain fog that's hard to get through at the moment. Which I would love, because I want to make some art again.

VLOGMandy van Goeije2021-08-06 | With the tips that I got on my last video I've made some changes to my Ultimate Watercolor Palette and I have now 51 lovely pigments that I'm going to fill my half pans with soon!!!
It took 3 full work days, but the loveliness is overwhelming. SO worth it!
I will soon share a video about the process, because it's been a little more work than just choose some nice colors. You'll see.
I hope you don't mind the shaking of my camera...this was recorded totally on the fly. I will record a full and steady video about my palette when it's ready, but I wanted to run this by you quickly to see if I've missed any pigments in my quest for THE Ultimate Watercolor set :-)
Brands used are Sennelier, Daniel Smith, Rembrandt and Schmincke Horadam, so it's been a dreadful amount of work to compare all the paints, but it was equally lovely ♥

In this video I offer other ways of connecting, I explain my motivations for leaving facebook and talk about the challenge it is to leave a social media platform that is so deeply engrained in our modern lives.
It appears that facebook tends to share posts containing criticism on the platform a lot less than any other posts (an hour after posting this video on fb there's zero response, which is highly unusual afer posting anything), so I decided to at least post the video podcast on my youtube as well, in case some of my followers here are a facebook friend too. Then at least they will know I've left and where they can reach me - although despite the fact that youtube is not a social platform, it is a very good place to reach out since I feel the connections and interactions here are meaningful.
