The Overkill Pathfinder BMS on the Testbench. Too much is not working... Off-Grid Garage 2025-09-13 | OK, this is the second part of testing the Pathfinder BMS from Overkill Solar. I have now connected it to a 48V battery and are following along the documentation to cycle the battery while the BMS learns all about it and gets mor confident in calculating the BMS. BUT what I found so far is less than impressive! This BMS, the app, the connections have so many issues, that I don't know where to start. It will be a very long way for Overkill to get this all right and make a nice BMS out of this... beta version? Is it even a Beta-version?Balancer design, heat radiation, app crashes, constant logins, faulty current calibration,... the list goes on and on...But I also found something which works quite well with this BMS: the MQTT linking and Home Assistant integration. The new Pathfinder BMS from Overkill Solar - but, has it found its path, yet? Off-Grid Garage 2025-09-07 | I got really excited when Overkill Solar announced this new BMS last year. The specs and features looked great: 1A balancer, Wifi, OTA-updates, display, positive side switching, Home Assistant support and much more.So, here we are and this BMS now sits on my workbench. The BMS itself looks great, well designed and built. Everything is at the right place and easy to operate. The screen is tiny though and I wish it would be bigger and even detachable. Some features are a bit clunky to work out how they are intended to be used. Overkill supplies a 46-page documentation, but this lags some details on how to do a basic setup of Wifi and OTA-updates. There is a lot of trial and error with these two basic functions.It also seems, that not all settings are accessible through the screen or app yet. How this active balancer (almost) killed my battery. We knew it, but here is the proof! Off-Grid Garage 2025-08-08 | The QSO battery is dead! Lead-Acid to Lithium: Are these few Ah sufficient for the Gate? LiFePO4 capacity test. Off-Grid Garage 2025-07-28 | Before moving on with replacing the dead lead acid batteries in the front gate with LiFePO4 cells, I want to make a last capacity test as I believe that cell #4 will not hold charge for too long and needs replacing before the final installation.As expected, cell 4 has the lowest capacity and the BMS terminates the capacity test, turning off the load as well as the MPPT. This is also a good test to find out if everything starts up again once the sun comes out ans recharges the battery.In a spreadsheet, I have noted all loads and how much Ah will be used over a 24h period. I probably need to make some adjustments to the existing solar to make it work. What is the most SOC accurate JK-BMS in comparison to the Victron Smart Shunt? Off-Grid Garage 2025-07-07 | The SOC calculation or estimation of the JK-BMS is one of the most complaint issues with this device. Especially after a few weeks of not fully charging and resetting the BMS to 100%, the SOC can drift up to 60%. New Bluetooth/Wifi PACE BMS tested with new firmware. Worse than before? Off-Grid Garage 2025-07-04 | So, here we are again... Pace has provided a new firmware which is supposed to fix the issues when paralleling the new Pace BMS with older versions already on the market.After upgrading, I noticed the same bugs again: DCL not showing, available capacity wrong, and the main issue that this firmware should have fixed, is still present!The BMS also tells the inverter (or at least it tells my Victron system), that 2 batteries are online, even only one is actually connected. Lead-Acid to Lithium Conversion turns into a valuable Cell Test and Repair Task. Off-Grid Garage 2025-06-14 | Hahaha, I have to laugh about myself: this is a project in the make for the last 5 years. I always... really always, wanted to replace the lead acid batteries in my solar gate with lithium batteries. It is so annoying, that these AGM blocks will not live longer than 2 years in this location. The gate always fails on us, when you need it most: in really bad weather!So, that's now a thing from the past as I finally do it and replace these batteries and the PWM solar charge controller with something 'new'. A pretty straight forward task and it should not take long...After building the 8s LiFePO4 battery out of PALO cells, the task suddenly turns into a fault-finding, troubleshooting, cell-testing video. There is a ton to learn and observe from this though and I never mind such a twist of an actual project. We will get there eventually and reach the goal of replacing the old AGM batteries with lithium cells. Which model works best, V14, V15 or V19? | Part1 Off-Grid Garage 2025-06-08 | In this video, I want to start a test with the JK Inverter BMS and determine which model has the best and most accurate SOC calculation. It is a well-known problem with this BMS, that SOC calculation gets more and more inaccurate if the BMS is not reset to 100% frequently. Especially in winter when most of us don't manage to fully charge the battery for weeks or months, the state of charge shown by the JK BMS is often out of control.So, here we have the new V19, its predecessor V15 and the first gen V14 of the JK inverter BMS all in one test. They compete against the Victron Smart Shunt as the 'point of truth'. This is a long-term test for the next few weeks, where I want to charge and discharge the battery every day but never hit the 100% and actually reset the BMS. PACE asked me to stop testing this! 🤡 Off-Grid Garage 2025-06-05 | Today, I'm trying to parallel the three Orientpower 'Jaki' Batteries and test if the BMS can communicate with each other. From previous testing we did with the Pace BMS, I remember that there were some issues when paralleling different BMS.And, no surprise here, I found a couple of bugs which are so obvious, that you have to wonder if they tested their own BMS at all.To make things even worse, PACE requested that I stop testing their products, and I'm not joking! JK-BMS V14, V15 and V19 in parallel and first full charge. Why no 100% reset of the BMS? Off-Grid Garage 2025-05-23 | This is a bit of an experiment, I wanted to do since the new JK-BMS V19 came out: paralleling all three BMS and see how they work together. I check for all parameters and settings in Venus OS first to ensure they are all correct. Secondly, I fully charge the battery to check on the 100% reset of all BMS... and found a problem when there is no communication to the inverter. As expected, the voltages are slightly different and some of the BMS do not reset. With inverter communication, however, the voltage will be shared across the system and the BMS reset perfectly. This is not particular related to JK but is valid for any other BMS as well which does not communicate with the inverter. Will this 1kW charger be enough to charge a 44kWh battery? Yes, but... Off-Grid Garage 2025-05-13 | So, at the moment, I'm experimenting with a small 1kW grid charger to keep my system running during the night, so the inverter does not shut down because of low voltage. I set up a little routine in Home Assistant which turns on the charger at low voltage and off again once the voltage has risen a bit. That works fantastic so far and is probably the solution I will go with once we go full off-grid. I only need the charger for a few weeks during wintertime, so I decided to not install it permanently anywhere. The impossible Repair of the JK-BMS. Im getting B-Serious! Surviving winter with lots of shading with no additional Solar? Preparing for fully Off-Grid. Off-Grid Garage 2025-05-01 | Do I need more solar or more batteries to make it through the Australian off-grid winter? We are going to have a look at the current solar and battery setup as well as the grid-connected solar. Both systems will be merged into one large setup once the feed-in contract runs out in 2027. It is good to prepare for this time and start collecting data about both systems. With the help of Home Assistant, I'm displaying both scenarios next to each other, off-grid and grid connected. We are taking a glimpse into the future when both are connected together. So, the question here is: can we survive on a large battery system charged in summer and make it through winter? That sounds crazy!For now, I have to setup my pool fence solar again to gain a few kWh per day and feed this into the PowerWall 2.0 and the Gopelpower battery. Great feature with major flaws | Part IV Off-Grid Garage 2025-04-25 | And in the last video about the new 'old-style' B-Series BMS from JIKONG we want to have a look at the Parallel Module or Current Limiter. This is an external device which connects in parallel to the BMS and in the event of an overcurrent disconnect of the BMS, limits the charge current to 5A.That sounds good and brings the B-series BMS to the same 'level' as the inverter BMS. After testing the current limiter module, it seems that this solution is poorly designed and implemented. It sits in a Seplos Mason DIY Kit and consists out of 5 different battery types and brands (video link down below).I use the alternative front panel which hosts the JK Inverter BMS but make it fit to the Seplos Mason battery box. Well, it kind of fits as the outside mounting holes do not line up perfectly, but with a bit of filing and drilling, you can make it work! EEL DIY V5 Build and EVE LF280K Double-Hole Terminals Capacity Test. Whats up with this fuse tho? Off-Grid Garage 2025-04-01 | Today, I received the missing batteries from Steve, which were accidentally mixed up by the EEL warehouse. I got his and he got my batteries. So, we swapped!These are the 4 missing cells to finalise the EEL DIY Kit V5. It is really a nice battery box, but certainly not perfect as you can see throughout the built process here in this video.I also show how to top balance this new battery using nothing but the JK BMS internal active balancer. It is so much more convenient and also a good test of your system and all settings for the BMS. The cell compression is still a hot topic and I often been called out for highlighting the compression systems in these boxes while stating on the other hand, that compression is not necessary. EV charging challenge: I need to find 46kWh until tomorrow | I also finished the outside wall Off-Grid Garage 2025-03-29 | First up in the video, a quick update on the new JK Inverter BMS V19 and the sensitivity of the shunt as well as on the size of the new screen.I cannot believe, I have finally finished this plasterwork at my new battery room. The last coat, a bit of sanding, another last and very thin layer, done!I also found a solution to fill the gap above the rafters from one room to the other. The mail also delivered the missing cells from Steve, so we can finish the EEL V5 battery and do a capacity test.I'm also facing the challenge that I have to fully charge my wife's EV until the next day 9am. She came home with 8% only and I have to find some 40kWh of energy to get this done. Not a problem with all the batteries, right? Well, it was quite challenging, and I had to come up with a bit of a strategy on how and when to swap batteries so I don't need to get up in the middle of the night and reconnect another battery to keep the charger going. New JK Inverter BMS V19. First test and... oh, look at his display! + Part I Off-Grid Garage 2025-03-23 | Today, we are having a first look at the brand new JK Inverter BMS V19! Yes, there is new hardware V19. I don't know what happend to V16, V17 and V18 but they don't exist (remind me to ask Jikong about that!). Not too much has changed with the BMS itself but it now has an additional UART port which is not only necessary for the new display but also for additional upgrades which will come in the future. I could also not help myself and install one of these new BMS in the Gobel-Tower, replacing a JK-BMS with a JK-BMS. That was mainly because I wanted to see the new display in action. This JK-BMS would not talk to anything. The fix was unexpected! Off-Grid Garage 2025-03-19 | This is one of those “fun” problems I've been itching to tackle for ages: the very first JK Inverter-BMS I installed in a Gobelpower SR1 battery decided it had trust issues and refused to talk to other BMS units—or even the PC software, for that matter. The Bluetooth app? Oh, that was feeling chatty and worked just fine, letting me access the BMS and tweak the settings. The CAN communication to the Victron Verbo GX? Smooth as butter. But RS485 comms? Dead as a doornail.So, the obvious plan was to swap out the comms board and cables because, you know, why not play hardware roulette? If that failed—and let's be honest, the odds weren't great—I’d have to bite the bullet and contact Jikong for advice. After all, this was the very first JK BMS we ever tested on the channel, so maybe it was just having a mid-life crisis.Cue the ‘crane-action’ (don’t ask) and a fun session of battery Tetris in the Gopelpower stack. Well, two days later it hit us with a big flood all around us. Like a wonder, we had neither water nor any damage to our property and buildings.But we lost power. No grid, no juice, no lights! Muller Energy JBD 250A 16s BMS with 5A Balancer. Better than JK?👑 Off-Grid Garage 2025-03-09 | 2 years ago, we had a look at a similar BMS already and many of you requested an 8s and 16s version of this BMS. Well, here it is, the new JBD Smart BMS 'Muller Energy Edition' with 5A active balancer! This is a great BMS with very cool features which you will not find anywhere else: 250A continues current, 5A active balancer, discharge switch, 6s-22s LiFePO4, Touch LCD, 16AWG Balance Cables.It is a modified JBD BMS which can drive a Heltec 5A active balancer. And this is all controlled through the same app and setting as for the internal balancer of this BMS. The Muller Energy BMS also has the 'traditional' discharge switch which disables the discharge FETs to safely allow connecting an inverter.This BMS has very good specs and features, but can it keep up with a JK Inverter BMS or is it even better? Cooling the Battery Room (and house): Daikin Cora AC Wifi Installation and HA Integration Off-Grid Garage 2025-02-17 | We are getting closer to install the AC in the Off-Grid Garage Battery and System room. As a final preparation, I'm installing the Wifi module and controller in the Daikin Cora head unit. Once the system is installed and connected, this will enable us to control the AC from within Home Assistant.I also need to make a decision about mounting the outside compressor unit either at the wall or on a concrete foundation.We have 3 of these Daikin units already installed in our house and they work very well. JBD new energy (LWS) BMS Software and App tested... I cant believe this is still a thing in 2025! Off-Grid Garage 2025-02-09 | In this next video about the LWS BMS aka JBD new energy, we will have a comprehensive look at the software, the mobile app and all parameters and settings we can adjust for this BMS.Even I read the documentation for this BMS before, I was still shocked to discover that the pack overvoltage protection was used as the requested charge voltage, or CVL! That is crazy that we still have to deal with this sh!t in 2025. A BMS protection parameters should never (NEVER) being used to charge a battery. And this is exactly what this BMS, or the current firmware at least, does. The BMS tells the inverter what to do but we cannot charge a battery to a certain voltage and run the BMS into an OVP at the same time. This would not allow for any absorption or balancing. I cannot support such a BMS and software which is 5 years or more behind what we have already achieved with the JK-BMS.Also, some of the default parameters of this BMS are far too high and potentially dangerous. JBD new energy has nothing to do with the Jiabaida JBD BMS we all know. However, JBD new energy holds the trademark for the name 'JBD', but Jiabaida is using JBD as their product name. Gen-1 EVE cell terminals causing trouble after bus bar replacement. I should have known better! Off-Grid Garage 2025-02-02 | This was an unexpected outcome of the simple task of replacing some busbars in the Battery Shelf. I have shown this a few times here on the channel, when the middle shelf battery charges and discharges slower than the top and bottom shelf battery. I always blamed this on the aluminium bus bars we have used for this battery and the resulting higher internal resistance. So, it is not hard to replace these aluminium bus bars with copper ones and lower the internal resistance.
