American music is very much what people brought to these shores from diverse circumstances around the world. Alongside native melodies, it was all brought together into a new classical school of music by the courageous efforts of Jeanette Thurber who created the National Conservatory of Music of America, and the crucial role of Antonín Dvořák as Director of the Conservatory from 1892-1895 and his collaboration with H.T. Burleigh.

As we remember the tragedy of September 11, 2001, the event that launched the forever wars of the past quarter century which are now reaching an ominous crescendo, let us continue the dialogue of cultures that brings the world together.

Join us as we explore the music of Brahms, Dvořák, H.T. Burleigh, Hall Johnson, Verdi and more.

"The purpose of art is to celebrate and strengthen the noblest state of mind which the individual person can achieve, and to aid thus in making us better people. It is a contribution best and most naturally celebrated in the manner agape prescribes, by an intensification of that anti-erotic quality of emotion we associate with childlike tears of joy.

The most precious gift we may receive, is the means to bring forth the force of agape to rule our minds, and guide our actions, at will. Artistic beauty is a lever by means of which we are enabled to do just that. That is the purpose of art in general, and music in particular, according to the Classical Idea."
