20. Promo for "This Week" (Despite a number of reforms made by leader Mikhail Gorbachev since 1985, the Soviet Union had experienced a slow collapse of centralized power throughout the 1980's. After a coup attempt in August of '91 which was thwarted by the recently elected Russian president Boris Yeltsin, Gorbachev had lost much of his political influence and power had quickly shifted to Yeltsin, who was an anti-communist. On 12/8/91 the Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian SSRs met and signed the Belovezha Accords, declaring that the Soviet Union no longer existed and established the Commonwealth of Independent States to replace it. Gorbachev announced his resignation on Christmas Day, 1991 with the Soviet Union formally dissolved the following day.)
