The theme of 2023 is "Topple Town", a domino and machine setup built to look like a miniature city - go relax at the domino beach, take the train to the machine jungle, or grab a box seat at the domino sports arena. This year, we are proud to present to you Reactica's very first no-stop falldown with every single domino toppled!This year's event took place from July 9 to July 15, 2023, at The Tech Interactive in San Jose, CA. The team also hosted workshops throughout the week teaching the venue guests how to build dominoes and machines. On July 15 at 1 pm, we toppled everything for an in-person audience of hundreds!This has been Reactica's best year yet, and we are once again the largest active team-led domino and machine event in California. Random Hybrid Videos II Flash Domino 2022-12-17 | Many people who create kinetic art will build one of two kinds of projects: giant domino setups, or chain reaction machines. Then, there are hybrid builders like me, who attempt both. How well can I build dominoes and machines individually? How well can I combine the two? 32,000 Dominoes: Beating The Odds - Reactica 2022 Official Topple Video Flash Domino 2022-07-11 | This year’s build features 32,000 dominoes, 200 machine steps, and a super talented team of twelve builders. With domino techniques from many different decades, and machine tricks with many different levels of complexity, this is the best build and topple that Reactica has had so far.This year's theme is "Beating The Odds", with tricks and ideas centered around probability. There are trickshots, launches, and lots of risk! The setup is divided into four main quadrants, with a spinner wheel and arrow at the very center - which section will the arrow land on? The grand finale is the unofficial World Record for Longest Structure Chain, with 36 domino structures connected by string that fall in sequence.From June 27 to July 3, we were hard at work setting up this build at The Tech Interactive in San Jose, CA. Throughout the week, we also hosted workshops teaching the venue guests how to build dominoes and machines. On July 4 at noon, we toppled everything for an in-person audience of hundreds!I've waited so long to bring Reactica back as a live event and I am so proud of what we accomplished this year. But, fearless is perfect - this domino setup literally adventures out of its comfort zone to topple in different ways. At first, the theme of climbing was just some assigned gimmick that I gave the machine, just to have one. But, after some thought, I guess there are more layers to it. Random Hybrid Videos Flash Domino 2020-09-18 | In chain reaction art, a hybrid builder is someone that builds both dominoes and machines. However, “dominoes and machines” doesn’t define the hybrid project as well as it does the builder. There is a wide range to what hybrid projects are, including: tricks that combine dominoes and machines, projects that separate both into sections, and even setups that have both but favor one over the other. I’ve declared myself a hybrid builder for years now, and yet very few of my videos have touched on what hybrid art could be. That changes with this video, which showcases hybrid art as a spectrum from intricate dominoes falling in machine-like ways to machines with longer domino connections. Here are eight setups from all across the hybrid spectrum.This video is also an important step in the evolution of my building style. My domino style was always prone to intricacy and integration of other objects over large and visual designs, but because of that, it really helped me foster my developing machine style. It’s been a gradual process, as managing both dominoes and machines can slow you down from getting really good at either one. I’m glad to be steadily getting better, and I’ve felt comfortable with both art forms for a while now. I also hope to show the range of hybrid art more clearly in the future. These Setups Become Progressively More Compact Flash Domino 2020-04-01 | SUBSCRIBE TO TWIGyoutube.com/channel/UCQ2Gt7BSF9XX5HXym35cXJQIt's been too long since either Twig or I have uploaded an actual stylistic domino video- for me, it's been almost three years! I'm so happy we could now make one together. The concept of "progressively more compact" setups is something I've wanted to do for a while (and apparently Twig's had the idea in their back pocket too)! While I thought I could capitalize on some free time last December to finally execute this concept, these projects ended up taking months for us. The final result could not be more worth it.I made the setups with 1K, 3K, and 5K dominoes, and Twig made the other three. Both the 3K and 5K setups are actually setups that I built twice. The first build was last December, and I finished them both in about two weeks. But watching them back, I decided I didn't like the style- they seemed rushed, the compactness wasn't consistent, and it seemed like I used too many filler ideas instead of core ones. When I returned home from school again in March, I built them both for the second time. I am much happier with the results from the second attempts, and those are what made the final cut! Maybe I'll upload the first builds eventually as well.With all the time I've given my building style to improve, plus the fact that two of my three setups were given multiple attempts, I can confidently say this work is me at my best. And yet the intricacy of my projects doesn't get anywhere close to what Twig is now able to build. There are so many things I love about their setups in this video- structure variation to create scenery, more unexpected and unconventional collapsing structures, color combos with similar hues, color combos with contrasting hues, expert pathing, and just that they took the time to make every connection graceful so that no idea went to waste. A Really Long Useless Machine Flash Domino 2020-01-07 | A machine that starts with opening a box and ends with closing the same box. Nothing is accomplishedMy section of the machine is everything on the far end of the table (0:35-0:57) and the lever for the start/end box. Due to lack of build time, my section didn’t end up as intricate or clean as I would’ve wanted it to be. It did end up being pretty reliable at least- during testing it only failed twice, one of which was a reset fail (also not counting when the falling book in berlagawesome's section caused early triggers in my section).This was still a really fun collab though! It was really nice to visit and build with berlagawesome again, he knew how to manage his build time and he executed his part of the machine really well. His entire section on the mantle was super creative, and the super linear build space didn't seem like an obstacle for him. The Popcorn Pouring Machine - Reactica 2019 Official Video Flash Domino 2019-08-23 | Reactica 2019 once again breaks the record for biggest chain reaction in California! This year's machine has over 500 steps and pours a bucket of popcorn. After fully funding a Kickstarter, tackling all the logistics, and pulling many late build nights, I'm very proud of what we accomplished this year!This year's event took place at The Tech Interactive in San Jose, CA from 8/3 to 8/9. The final falldown was on 8/10 for an in-person audience of hundreds while livestreamed to many more. The Giant Multi-Object Domino Chain Flash Domino 2019-01-05 | Hi :)I had some time over my winter break so I decided to build a giant (but still relatively small) chain reaction project. Similar to the Foreign Object Domino Chain from about a year and a half ago, this project uses many different objects for domino tricks. I feel like this is where my style shines the most :DLearning from recent team events, I'm now trying to clean up my style a bit. I've started using k'nex and condensing my tricks down to consistent motions. So far it's working out- aside from scrapping one trick, everything in the video worked during every trial run. Hopefully I can keep getting better.This project even had a rebuild factor, where I could set all dominoes and tricks back up in a couple of hours if it failed. Fortunately though, it worked on the first try :pI'm very happy that I got the chance to do a homemade project like this again! It's always good practice for event building. 15,000 Dominoes + Californias Biggest Chain Reaction - Reactica 2018 Official Topple Video Flash Domino 2018-06-30 | I'm very proud to present to you another annual build at the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose, under the new name "Reactica". Months of preparation, setup and material planning, followed by one week of building full-time led to our team creating the biggest chain reaction in California! Buildup took place from 6/18-6/22 with the topple on 6/23.The final result turned out amazing. 15,000 dominoes and a 200-step chain reaction took up half of the museum's theater, and was toppled and livestreamed for an audience of hundreds. All of the team members put their best ideas and work on the table. For this video, we did decide to use lots of backup footage rather than falldown footage, to emphasize that every part of the chain reaction could be seen clearly and to cover up a few fails. Be on the lookout for machine closeups too, which will be uploaded by many other team members- that way you can take an in-depth look at each table!Besides the project itself and all of its aspects, I love the event dynamic. Everyone on the building team is skilled and efficient, and the museum staff goes above and beyond every year. It's amazing to see children visit and try their hand at domino setups, building things from their minds that nobody has seen before. This event reminds me that people work best when they make time for things they believe in and do things the way they want to do them. Getting inspired by what my team comes up with, seeing the children's setups, and watching the museum's work ethic is a great way to learn. 17,000 Dominoes - The Most Destructive Domino Chain Ever Flash Domino 2017-09-09 | All 17,574 dominoes that I own were on the floor. This project means so much to me. I spent days testing entire segments of this project and many parts were built multiple times. I would go to bed with nightmares about so many possible things that would fail or trigger early, and hurriedly fix them the next morning. Parts of the project I had to leave standing while I left for travel events and day excursions. In the end, a lot of this project worked – much more of the project than I expected to work. There are so many tricks and ideas I’ve been holding on to and finally got to build. If the year was 1976, I’d hold the domino world record ;)Today is the day I leave for college (9/9/17), which means that I’ve had to clean up my building room, find a safe place for my chain reaction materials and get all my content online by today. After over 100 videos and weekly summer uploads, this video will be the last homemade video of its kind. Even if I continue to post, the videos you see may be differently formatted or in new building places. As of today, my days of building at home by myself are over. As for team events and collaborative projects, I hope to continue those. I am still in touch with CDM about events in 2018 and beyond, and will be very open to attending events and projects that other builders need help for! I have made so many friends on YouTube and established real-life connections, and I don’t plan to lose them. Building with others is much more beneficial to me than building alone. Building chain reactions has always been a passion project for me. Over six years it’s cost so much time and money and it requires quite a lot of support. All this effort went into boosting nothing more than a passion. But after all this time, I’ve been looking for friendships, conversations, and experiences. The gains from building aren’t obvious, but they’re there. Building is nothing more, yet nothing less than a passion project. Berlagawesome hosted this one and he also pulled off one of the best domino setups I have ever seen. The original sonimod spiral idea was amazing to see and the entire setup worked perfectly! Making It Rain - 90-Step Chain Reaction Machine Flash Domino 2017-08-05 | My biggest and best machine yet and maybe even my best video! This is my last full-length home machine that gets its own video to itself. I went all out and hot glued, cut up, and basically damaged all my materials for this machine so there's no way I can ever make a decent machine again anyways now LOL! :DSuper proud of the multi-use elements and the compact style on this one. If you look closely, you can find a stapler, a Chinese yo-yo, and a fidget spinner. Magnets were also my friends for this one, they're hidden in a lot of places to keep things stable and kinetically sound. Best of Flash Domino 2016-2017 Flash Domino 2017-07-22 | My last "Best of Flash Domino" montage was uploaded on July 11, 2016. Here's the next one, 376 days and around 580 subscribers later... I guess there's no shame in admitting that this was a pretty slow overall year for me. I barely used my building room (I can count my number of building days on my fingers) and I had to cancel a lot of upcoming videos. As an individual, I was not on top of my game at all. However, my two biggest achievements this year may be my biggest building achievements ever- CDM 2017 and California Domino Art @YTSLA! (No footage of the latter project in this video though, I don't meet the sub requirement.) Looking back at how well I built during events like these, I noticed something.I built better at events than at home, and I also made a lot of collabs this year (and more coming soon!) Maybe this was because I had no time to produce full videos by myself, but it does support one major lesson that I've learned. That is: one of the most beneficial things you can do is find and interact with like-minded people. I am still very, very proud of the things I build on my own, given the busy life I live, but to see others contribute to videos I make (and to contribute to others' videos of course) gives those videos extra meaning. It's not only production but communication, video calls, and mutual respect. The CDM and YTSLA events would not have happened without other builders (Sprice was the lead builder for the YTSLA event, so of course, that definitely would not have happened).I'm looking forward to building with the ISM team again next week and I can't wait to work with engineers in college. Establishing relationships and living experiences means so much more than a YouTube video.May we all keep pushing until we find the people and the things we love to do. Dominoes at VidCon 2017! (ft. Hevesh5) Flash Domino 2017-07-01 | Hevesh5 and I were at VidCon 2017 together for a couple of days, so of course, we decided to build some small projects for passerby audiences. Although this is not an official collaboration video, most of the projects in this video were built 50/50 by Hevesh5 and I! I would highly, highly recommend VidCon to anyone. The entire convention looks beautiful and it's in a great area. On top of that, there are so many great people to talk to and everyone is always curious about what other people make. I met close to forty different creators with the most amazing personalities and I subscribed to them all! This is a new kind of video for this channel, breaking the pattern of planned setups and screenlinks with on-the-go travel footage. Usually I save these kinds of videos for WCB but VidCon was amazing and I am more than happy to upload this on my main channel!
