This game was TOTALLY unexpected, and honestly I'm surprised I didn't ruin the pace like at least 50 lines before I did. I definitely want to grind for a really early 29 maxout now.
I'll try to do streams consistently on Tuesdays, Thursdays and maybe Mondays/Fridays, if I can manage to get my college homework done, of course.
This game was played in my November CTM qualifier, streamed live on Twitch on October 31st/November 1st. Qualifiers this month had a Level 39 line cap imposed on every game, which is why I went super aggressive on Level 29.
This is definitely the most points I've gotten on level 29 under the pressure of a linecap, that's for sure. Whether or not I'll get more in a CTM match remains to be seen...First Recorded WR in 13 YEARS - TGM3 Shirase (C) 4:05.30EricICX2022-09-27 | This run is the culmination of all my time spent playing this game. In my opinion, it's far more impressive than anything I've ever done in NES Tetris. Here's why.
Although NES Tetris was released some 16-odd years before TGM3, the real metas for the achievements of today were developed very recently. Tapping only really rose to prominence in 2018, and rolling was revealed just over a year ago, in 2021. I personally view these playstyle shifts as making the game an almost entirely new game, unlocking things that were never possible before, like the ability to play consistently on Level 29.
In TGM3, the meta was set in stone either right at the game's release, or, depending on how you think about it, 17 years before with the release of Sega Tetris. It's a very simple game that's easy to understand but incredibly hard to master, and people have had 17 years so far to master it.
Contrast this with NES Tetris, where people have only had a single year to master the much more mechanically demanding, in my opinion, playstyle of rolling, along with stacking on the Level 29 killscreen. I don't personally think we'll ever have a hard limit in terms of the records that can be achieved, and it'll eventually just become a battle of who can sit down and play the longest game. It hasn't gotten even close to there yet, but it's seriously getting there.
Japanese TGM3 players have had 17 years to play TGM3 since it came out, and even more time to play the previous TGM games before it came out. I'm honestly just amazed that it took me, someone with zero experience playing Tetris previously, only three years to exceed, in my opinion, one of the greatest Tetris games ever played of all time.
That is why I believe this is far more special than anything I've achieved in NES Tetris. It's beating the best recorded time of a community that's been playing since the release of the game, compared to being part of the initial surge of records brought on by new developments. Don't get me wrong, NES Tetris world records are still impressive, but I don't think that any of the records today will matter in the long run. This record, on the other hand, definitely will matter to me.
But this isn't the end for me. ZAB has an unrecorded 4:03 that he got in 2011. And I'm definitely going to grind for that soon... twitch.tv/EricICXNES Tetris - FIRST EVER GLITCHED COLORS and 6 Million Points (Former World Record)EricICX2022-08-20 | The greatest game of NES Tetris ever played. At least, for now.
This game demolishes both the score and lines world records, and it's the first ever game to get glitched colors in NTSC Tetris.
What's next? Well, only time will tell, I guess... (maybe you'll see what's next at twitch.tv/ericicx 😉)
Question: What is the "2BE266" in the top corner? Answer: This was played during a same piece sets match against Huffulufugus in CTM, and that is my seed.
Question: Since this is a set seed game, does it count for the record? Answer: Yes. There isn't any real basis to challenging it, unless it could somehow be proven that I memorized the seed (I did not) or had external assistance when it came to knowing the pieces in the seed (I did not)
Question: Why is the game capture so sharp? Did you switch to emulator? Answer: I am playing on a MiSTer FPGA console. In simple terms, it's basically a RetroUSB AVS or Analogue NT. It behaves exactly like an original console in every way, besides outputting clean RGB and HDMI video.
Question: Why do the level numbers not glitch out? Answer: This was played on TetrisGYM v5. This version fixes the level counter to use three digits, and re-adds the glitched colors, as they were fixed in earlier versions of TetrisGYM.
Question: Why does the handcam quality steadily decrease? Answer: As I was playing this game, the sun went down. I didn't expect this game to go on for so long, so I didn't turn on any lights. If you look at the raw video, the handcam gets steadily darker, and I compensated for this by applying a brightness filter in my video editing software, so the handcam is at least somewhat visible here.
Question: Where can I find the awesome tournament and music in this video? Answer: ctm.gg for the tournament, Flexstyle for the music

Back then, the WR was quite low, around 100 lines. I thought it would happen, but it would take an incredibly long time.
Well, rolling came along and really accelerated the process. And I'm glad I can finally join the club of people who have 200+ lines from a 29 start, which currently has only 10 members, including myself.
Also, this was a PB by 91 lines, absolutely crazy I could have had WR but I'm still really happy I broke it by that much
apex of chill and curing sorrow are also both really good, but I didn't want voices or (other) game sounds in this video. if you actually read the music lists under my videos, listen to those two as well. there's a video by whimsyheath showing just how much effort they put into making sure those game sounds were accurate, seriously its a great song. honestly lo-fire emblem is full of great songs.

If you watched that game, you'll probably remember how it was a huge choke, and also only 9 lines behind the WR at the time (136 by Joseph, hey look this ties it). Since then, every single time I've come close to it (and I have, a lot), I've choked the run. With tapping alone, I got past 100 at least ten times, 110 at least six or seven, and 120 twice. Each time, the run ended with me missing something easy, or making a bad placement and getting screwed by the RNG. With rolling, this mental block became even more apparent when I got 124. That was the most soul-crushing thing ever, because even though I beat my roll PB by 22 (at the time), overall PB was literally free. Afterwards, there was a point I was getting 100+ lines on 29 nearly every day, I just couldn't pull myself together for the final 20. Then, on this fateful day, I was getting used to a new technique for making rolling easier, taping a piece of paper to the back of my controller in order to reduce friction. Before this game, I'd gotten 102 and 126 lines back to back. And believe me, that last one was pretty painful. But after taking a small break, I had another good game, and finally broke through. Played on 9/8/2021.
If anything, it's pretty crazy how far the game has come in just nine months.

Holy crap, I was completely in my element this game. Even all this time later I still can't believe I managed to pull all this off. After 5.5 years, Kevin's 4:45.55 in TGM3 Shirase has been broken with a 4:43.71!! I have nothing else to say, it's incredible!
(if you're asking about the time discrepancy in the title and thumbnail, TGM3 has a bug where the time shown on the field is 0.1 seconds slower due to the game stopping the timer late. On the leaderboards, this is fixed, so the game is 4:43.71 instead.)
