Windy City Riot 2021 - Two Decades BUTTER TV 2021-07-19 | "It's a moving, drunk, street fest/party of rollerbladers and it's the best collection of people I think that probably exists anywhere." — Brandon LorenzoChicago, Illinois — July 17th, 2021.Year twenty! WOW! The riot is known for it's big prize pot and this year was no surprise as first place took home 3K! Four skate locations with some unique approaches like setting up a wooden box to a square handrail or just gaping onto a kinked down ledge. The skating was entertaining and the crowd, as usual, was full of life. We got kicked out of the final spot but as the campus police were there, the show ended with a banger that was later awarded with a best trick prize. Dave Hartnett - Subtle Beast BUTTER TV 2021-02-04 | Filmed in New York and New England areas. Rhode Island has always had a pool of talent coming from there and Dave Hartnett is one of those names on that list. The filming of this project began in late July of 2016 and was finished around a year later, but we didn’t know that we were finished yet. I would meet Dave once every few months for a day or two and we would film whatever we can with no real schedule or planning. We would always talk about meeting up a few more times before I sat down to edit but scheduling and timing was never on our side and quickly the months apart would turn into years. A few days ago I went through the footage and realized, there’s definitely something really good here and rather than letting the footage age any longer, I decided to finally put it all together.If you’ve had the chance to meet Dave, then you know that he’s a man of very few words and he keeps things fairly simple but his skating speaks the opposite—hence the subtle beast. He’s always been one to keep your eyes on during street competitions as he won a good amount here on the east coast or at the very least placed in the top three. It’s been nothing but good times working together on this piece and hopefully in the future we can make the time to get a few sessions in to keep him included with upcoming projects because his skating and consistency to land tricks is very fun to watch . Tim Franken - 11:59 BUTTER TV 2020-12-22 | Filmed entirely in New Jersey towards the end of summer and into late fall of 2020— I’ve managed to run into Tim Franken at a Ghetto Community pop-up shop in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. From there we threw around the idea of linking up and getting a few clips together which turned into meeting up every Wednesday late at night and returning home around 3-4am (with the exception of one day where we skated around noon in a group session.). There’s something unique about skating and filming at night especially in the middle of a global pandemic. The streets were eerily empty even in some of the more typically busier areas but that’s also not to say that we didn’t hear or see some things—this is NJ after all. Working with Tim is actually pretty laidback as he just shows up and lays it down. No warming up and nothing short of really good vibes. This was my first contest coverage since the Pow-Wow Pro/Am back in March and it felt good to re-connect with everyone in person. Action Figures: Soichiro Kanashima - IKIGAI BUTTER TV 2020-08-01 | Japan - Summer, 2019 - I’ve had the pleasure of capturing some great highlights of Soichiro over the past few years from winning best trick at 2018’s Winterclash, taking first at the Boschi Pope Skate Off that same year, 2nd at 2019’s Blading Cup, and then taking a last minute trip to Japan where we stayed mostly in Tokyo to film street and wrapping up in his hometown of Okayama. While in the U.S. we don’t normally view the cicada as anything more than a bug however in Japan they are very symbolic. Aside from hearing them sing in anime and and even throughout this video, they represent the beginning of summer, play a significant role in several children’s lives, and most importantly, they represent personal transformation. As Soichiro states, Japan is an island which requires a plane to go anywhere outside of the country - “and because we only speak Japanese there’s a huge hurdle for us to go anywhere” - yet through his dedicated years invested into skating he was able to overcome that social hurdle and go beyond not only for himself but for the next generation of young skaters. From his most recent winning, (one of the biggest - if not the biggest - pay days in blading history) at the Chimera A-Side Final, to a plethora of memorable street skating sections in videos and online, to running his own “Yamada Green” skate park in Okayama guiding some of the already most talented kids— one can easily say that he has truly discovered his passion in life or found his “ikigai” as he continuously evolves and transforms as a skater and mentor.Thank you to everyone who helped make this episode possible._______________Ikigai (pronounced ee-key-guy) is a wonderful Japanese concept that essentially means “a reason for being.” It’s made from two Japanese words: iki, meaning “life” and kai, meaning “effect, result, worth or benefit.” Combined: “a reason for living.”Examples of ikigai are often related to aspects of social identity — including work and family life — but it’s often explained as something more than that. Cameron Talbott & BFree - A Layover At The Flowershop BUTTER TV 2020-04-05 | San Francisco, California—August 1st, 2019. After an 11 hour flight from Tokyo, I had a few hours to spare before returning back home to New York. I reached out to Cameron and BFree and it was decided that a short visit to the hidden DIY park would be the plan. You cannot see this park from the road; in fact, you have to climb over a wooden fence to get inside. After watching Cameron literally surf through the park I managed to get a few clips and afterwards we settled for some In-N-Out burger before making my way back to the airport and getting back on a plane for another 5 hours. A unique time for a skate contest to take place right before social distancing was implemented throughout the country. At the time, gatherings of 250 people or less were allowed so the powers at Kona skatepark held a meeting, asked a lot of questions, did a head count, and made a strict policy that if there were anymore than 250, the competition would be shut down instantly. A social media blackout policy was also instilled to deter people from showing up so no one knew, asides from us that were there, that the event was even happening—which made it special in its own way. In one aspect, Pow Wow 10 felt like one last hurrah before this pandemic takes us all into harder times. Skating and cheering in the Florida sunshine while people are cooking burgers and dogs on their grills and throwing back a few beers, add to that, some amazing live music performances and you have yourself a Pow Wow. Always a good time seeing everyone and after we make it through this pandemic we’ll get together and do it all again. We have to right? Because Pow Wow 11 is coming March, 2021! What you may have heard about Brian ‘BFree’ Freeman is true. The man is full of passion and carries that magic with him wherever he goes. Shot at the end of 2018; this piece serves more as a prequel to some of the things he’s accomplished today, one of which is running a full time business with his BFree Blading Academy. What’s inspiring about BFree is that he never has an excuse and is constantly pushing forward, not only in rollerblading, but as a family man which is a reflection of his character and how he conducts his lessons for the youth.During our shoot, California was experiencing massive fires where homes were destroyed and lives were lost. The typically blue skies were gray and the air quality was extremely poor. BFree still managed to get a solid piece together and show off what his days consist of. He did it all with a smile and, even under some of the worst circumstances, he maintained his positivity and again, continued to keep moving forward. Dreams come true if you’re dedicated and willing to put the work in. Windy City Riot: Nineteen Years BUTTER TV 2019-07-19 | “At the end of the day it happens because we make it happen.” — Adam BazydloChicago, Illinois — July 13th, 2019. Nineteen years and the Riot is still going strong…very strong. Lots of support was gathered by everyone which was clearly visible by the donations made to the prize pot as well as the amount of people who showed up. The skating took place at four different locations and the entertainment was nonstop—spots that would normally be hit maybe once for a clip were being session’d especially the last which was a big drop ledge and a kinked rail. Afterwards we all celebrated and winners were announced at a gallery of Matthias St. John’s amazing photographs where tons of stories were shared about many of them. Delta City Open IX: Candy Land BUTTER TV 2019-07-05 | “I’d buy that for a dollar!” - Bixby SnyderDetroit, Michigan — May 25th, 2019. The ninth year of DCO; Candy Land, which had some of the best art direction for its flyers leading up to the event, was nothing short of fun times with the community sticking together strongly while getting from one spot to another. The meet up and first spot was ledge island which is exactly what it sounds like. Everyone either drove or hopped on the bus provided to the second spot at the MLK apartments where the residents, especially young kids, gathered around the watch the clinic that was put onto the rail—definitely a highlight when the locals are cheering. We then made our way to an abandoned warehouse that was setup with DIY boxes, ramps, etc… which came at the perfect time because it began to rain pretty hard, and lastly the final spot which was a set of down rails. We ended the day at the newly built Riverside Skate Park where winners were announced along with bbq and cold ones. Nothing but good times and good hospitality. LES Survivor Series BUTTER TV 2019-06-28 | “That belt… wow… the Ultimate Warrior would be very Jealous. A small collaboration between IRollNY, butterTV, AirtoThe, and RUDY. After a long winter with little to no skating we put together a small contest at LES Skatepark to kick off the warmer days to come. Rather than all out skate jam where the best tricks win; we kept the rules to a simple game of SKATE (BL8 to keep it moving quicker). We also had mini challenges like best cess slides, best air over the launch, and a race around the block. The goal was not to get anyone hurt before the season started but to bring people together to hang, have a beer, grab some free stuff, and of course, win some money and a belt. A-Town Stomp X: Back 2 The Brewery BUTTER TV 2019-06-23 | “Its just, sometimes you gotta drill some p-rails into a truck and skate that shit.” —David SizemoreAtlanta, Georgia - March 16th, 2019. Although a little earlier than last year's Stomp which brought a slight chill into the air, the Starnes brothers put together another awesome event—number 10 to be exact. This year we stayed out of the streets jumping from one spot to the next and kept all the entertainment ins one location: Arches Brewery. They kicked things off with a warm up on the truck (we’ll get back to that in a sec) while others tried their skates at the race event. Tom Hyser was nice enough to supply everyone with a pair of big wheels from the Rollerblade truck. Next event was a crazy p-rail contest that kept shifting from bump offs to rails to guard rails to… yea it wasn’t your average p-rails. Next was a high grind contest followed by the main event: an F150 that could have been a set piece on Mad Max. It was exciting to see people simply grind it but like any contest, simple isn’t gonna win anyone money and so it got crazy. The after party was back at the Starnes house where winners were announced and there were plenty of food and drink going around for all the guests. It’s always an absolute blast down in the ATL. Winterclash 2019 BUTTER TV 2019-06-07 | "Do it for yourself."Eindhoven, Netherlands - February 14-16, 2019. Three days of madness. The amount of people that are in one building coming together to celebrate the one thing we all enjoy doing, watching, and supporting is incredible. Once again, much respect to Jojo and co. for putting together another successful event. There was alot to take in this year: as always, there was a ton of amazing skating happening in every direction (which makes this event one of the more challenging ones to film), as well as some very insightful panel discussions. Lots of beer was flowing around between the skate park and Blue Collar Hotel which hosted the Euro premiere of Ivan Narez's Valo 6 as well as "At The Movies" hosted by Jumpstreet's Austin and Billy starring Alex Broskow and a curated selection of some of his amazing video sections. Aside from watching everyone tear through Area 51 skate park, we were also treated to different panel discussions supporting the theme of this year’s clash. Action Figures: Jordan Baez - Ghetto Community BUTTER TV 2018-12-11 | Episode 02 - I spent a few days with Jordan this past summer and followed him around as he skated, picked up soft goods for Ghetto Community, ripped through Manhattan on his motorcycle, and showed his son how to be a better skater.Jordan is RAW. People often say that gritty New York City culture died when all of the transplants from different states showed up but Jordan proves that it's still alive and well here and that you soft. He also helped put together the blading scene on Lower East Side by encouraging long time friends and neighbors to strap up some skates as well as holding an annual street event called the 12th & D comp located in the Jacob Riis housing projects. Astoria Park Pro Conference 2018 BUTTER TV 2018-10-24 | http://www.buttertv.comhttp://www.instagram.com/buttertv"Rudy is for you" -- Rudy New YorkQueens, New York - October 20th, 2018. Photographer Ryan Loewy hosts the first competition under his new brand: Rudy New York along with the New York Skate Series and Blader Union. Literally in our backyard - Astoria Park. The first two rounds of the comp started at the plaza on two ledges angled upwards and moved to the quarter. In between there were brief intermissions for some simple ways to make quick cash: a toe roll and a cess slide contest. Afterwards we moved to the east side of the park to the last spot to skate two sketchy rails. On camera they look great... but in person it's a different story. This is where Dave Hartnett shined and took home the win but not without taking some punishment. Chris Pullar, Julian Hinsch, and Adonis Taylor also took home some battle wounds. It was brutal but also a reminder of the risks we take in this sport/lifestyle. Speedy recovery for those guys. Still, a great turnout and what a show for the locals in the neighborhood as they gathered around the spot, or were watching from their home balconies and front steps. Originally I had plans to fly out west with my wife to visit Utah and when I realized the date we were flying home I planned a detour to Northern California. I missed out last year so I was pretty stoked to be there and it did not disappoint (they never do). We met up at Adelante Academy for the first spot. After four heats there was a juniors competition and the energy of the crowd for the little Arvinites was amazing (Shout out to Matt Mickey from Intuition Skateshop. Then we made our way to Morrill High School, which was a slightly curved rail with an angled approach, and lastly, the classic IMYTA spot where the final four took place many years ago. The weather was sunny and the vibe was very cool. After the comp—Walter, who I met when I first arrived, let me catch a ride out to BJ Bernhardt’s studio where the afterparty was. Beers, pizza, two skate video premieres (Bay Connection and Grombè) and good company—What more could you ask for. Shout out to Keezy, Mike, and everyone who helped organize and attended the event.
