Art Journal Flip Through - Collages & Watercolor Abstracts LauraMixedMedia 2023-04-08 | I got this journal (the brand is Pacific Arc) while I was driving through Louisiana at a local art store. I liked it because it was so simple - no fru fru front, standard weight pages, and because of how the binding was, laid flat. I started using it while on vacation, and started with a little collage and watercolors. Due to the buckling from the water, I ended up only using every other page, so I kept that theme even when I switched to collages. I'm excited to have finished another journal, which is part of my goal this year! Intuitive Journaling in my Junky Journal LauraMixedMedia 2023-01-23 | I have been feeling a call to become a little more intuitive with my art. I think a lot of what I do is inherently intuitive as I don't *usually* have a plan, but many times I go in with an idea or a pre-conceived notion of what I want to do. So for me, intuitive art is not going in with an idea but rather just doing and seeing what happens. It can be hard to give up the reins, so to speak. For example, I started this page with some collage that I totally didn't intend to mostly cover. But that's where it took me, and I am happy with the result. What would have happened if I resisted covering things up? Or had given up on the page after I made the scribbles? I wouldn't have been as happy, that's for sure. I'm hoping that I will be able to continue this practice of following my intuition. As a creator that shares my work, it's hard to not focus on making "pretty" art, but that pressure definitely stifles my creativity. Making Freehand Floral Collage Papers - Part 1 LauraMixedMedia 2023-01-09 | It's no secret that the holiday season put me into a creative "funk" of sorts. November Mixed Media Menagerie - Gouache & Earth Tones LauraMixedMedia 2022-11-02 | #mmmnov22 #mixedmediamenagerieAutumn is in full swing, and this month’s theme goes perfectly with those fall feels. For November, we are playing with gouache in earth tones, and throwing a toothbrush in there. I have a collection of different acrylic gouaches. I got my first one at an art supply resale store here in Austin, and my collection grew from there. I love them because they flow like watercolors, but are opaque and matte and have such an interesting texture when they’re dry. They are perfect for making collage papers. I started out the project with my usual collage paper background, but I added some sewing pattern paper on top in some areas, to add a different tone and texture. Then I let my favorite gouache colors flow. Watching the video back, I could have stopped before adding any stencils and just left it a landscape, but I loved the idea of using @leacayoung9486 ‘s fall stencils. I had every intention of using the toothbrush at the end to do my splatters, but by the time I got there I totally forgot. So, if you could, just imagine that that’s what I did! October Mixed Media Menagerie - Celebrating Inktober! LauraMixedMedia 2022-10-05 | #mmmoct22 #mixedmediamenagerieIn honor of #inktober, this month our theme focused on using ink. Fountain pen was one of the items to use, but since I don’t have one, I decided to use my dip pen instead. I had a lot of fun playing with ink in different ways - doodling, making collage papers, and adding background layers; using both line work and also watching the ink spread and mix. The other part of this month’s theme was to “cut it up.” My initial thought was to cut up the doodle collage paper I made, but then I remembered that we were supposed to cut up the spread, meaning have a flippy page in the middle.
