In this video I open a 5 hook Ampex cartridge to replace a melted pinch roller. Finding a melted pinch roller is very common when dealing with older Ampex and Lear Jet cartridges. If a cartridge with a soft/melted pinch roller were to be inserted into a player, it would instantly be a big hard to clean mess and would mess up the tape. Fortunately if you notice the pinch roller before attempting to play the tape, the roller can re replaced without any damage to the tape and your player. The best way to get a replacement roller is to get it from a donor cartridge. Most RCA cartridges, most Warner Bros. cartridges and most Scotch blank cartridges have rollers that will work as replacement rollers. In this video I use a roller taken from a RCA cartridge.
