All-Natural Fire Starter Bricks (MonkWerks) MonkWerks with Fr. Thomas 2017-02-15 | If you're a DIYer, then you have a problem ... that's right ... what do you do with all the sawdust your produce? There's only so much mulch or compost you can use, and not every place will accept them if you put it on the curb. Milling Reclaimed Lumber (MonkWerks) MonkWerks with Fr. Thomas 2016-12-15 | I have a commission job that I'm working on which calls for upcycling some lumber that was removed during the recent renovation of the monastery. In this video, I show my process for milling the lumber into usable wood and then stacking it to acclimate to the shop. Unfortunately, I don't have a lumber mill to do the job for me, so I'm showing you how to do it in a moderately equipped shop. Upcycled Geometric Candlesticks (MonkWerks) MonkWerks with Fr. Thomas 2016-02-20 | A little less than a year ago, a friend of mine told me about some 12/4 oak that was going to be hauled out to the dumpster. There were several pieces that were bolted together as part of a delivery of construction material being used in a renovation project. Shortly after bringing it to the shop, I decided to cut a piece up to see what it looked like on the inside. The wood was under a lot of internal stress and was difficult to cut through it. Some of it was really beautiful on the inside, but it was no wonder that it was used as 'crate' material. I held on to the wood, nevertheless, until I could figure out what to do with the wood. Eventually I was commissioned to create a set of 2 and a set of 4 candlesticks for a church. And so one of the beams found a new home. Plywood Bench Plane: Limited Tools Build (MonkWerks) MonkWerks with Fr. Thomas 2015-02-21 | It’s Get Woodworking Week 2015! This is a great event put on by woodworkers every year to share our passion with others. One of the impediments that many people complain about is the cost of tools. In reality that does not need to be the case, nor does that mean that you need to have poor quality tools. The key is building your own tools. And so last year, I thought the best way that I could help was to show people how to do just that. Shapeoko 2 Spindle Upgrade (MonkWerks) MonkWerks with Fr. Thomas 2015-01-24 | I wasn't too impressed with the spindle that came with the stock Shapeoko 2 and I initially bought a Dremel 3000 to replace it. The Dremel had all the necessary power but ... 1)I want the Dremel for other things, and 2)Its tapered body makes it difficult to mount securely and square to the table. So I decided to add a trim router because of its pure cylindrical shape but that meant new mounts. Thanks to Matthew at Targ's Workshop I had a starter file to modify to fit my needs. Childrens Analogion (MonkWerks) MonkWerks with Fr. Thomas 2015-01-19 | Though I stand at a solid 6' tall not everyone finds it as easy to reach higher places. I particularly noticed it at my parish church, where the smaller children were not able to reach the icons. To rectify it, I built an icon stand (analogion) that was about half the size of a normal one. This particular stand can be used for other things as well, e.g. lectern or artist's display, and it can also be scaled up (or down if you wanted something shorter, not sure why). It is not surprising then that people have been turning to pallet wood and more rustic-style projects. Bungalow Birdhouse (MonkWerks) MonkWerks with Fr. Thomas 2014-09-30 | This birdhouse is inspired by the architectural styles of the early 20th century (one of my favorite time periods for woodworking and design). I incorporated a basic Arts and Crafts style with a hint of Asian influence. It is a fairly simple build, the most difficult part is cutting the compound angles, but there is an easy trick to getting them right. The roof is made from Walnut, while the walls and floor are Sassafras and the project is finished with Teak Oil. I cut a lot of rabbets and dados on the table saw, but the the dado stack usually leaves ridges. Then I have to use a chisel to clean out the channel. The easier way is to use a router plane. I had been wanting to get one for sometime, but they aren't cheap. And as a woodworker, I thought why buy when I can build it.
