Kalokes MysteriesAs a follow-up to my cover of Sonic Advance 2's True Area 53, this video loosely documents some small, but notable differences between the sound exported using Shiru's VGM Music Maker and foobar2000. As a reminder, the published cover was exported using VGM Music Maker (or Maker, for short). For the record, most of the issues found in foobar playback can be found in virtually all other VGM players, including but not limited to: VGMPlay, vgmPlayer, SonicPlayer, winamp. I will refer to foobar for the rest of the description because I think it is the most common way to play .vgm files and export them as .wav audio. Listen to the cover here: youtu.be/t1EATcvUIDs
You can hear the most subtle change from the start: foobar plays .vgm files and exports them as .wav files at a slightly higher pitch than Maker. This happens regardless of what speed the .vgm file is exported from Maker (in this case, 60Hz).
The other notable differences can be heard in FM channels 1, 3, and 5. In foobar, channels 1 and 3 lose the SSG-EG-produced "wavy" effect heard in the published cover, resulting in a more flat-sounding note with a regular noise interruption from the failed SSG effect. Channel 5 contains a similar failure in its percussion - not from the repeating drum, snare, and hi-hat, but from the more intense hits you first hear at around 0:10. This generally breaks the song, as it's meant to sound intense and drastic, but doesn't because foobar can't seem to work well with the SSG-EG effect that Maker produces.
One last, very subtle difference is in how foobar registers high amounts of toned feedback. It tends to sound muffled, or changed in some way. This is evident in FM channel 5, with the percussion mentioned earlier, but also in channel 2, when the repeating accompaniment starts at 0:12.
To summarize, foobar2000 appears to have trouble working with certain instruments tweaked with Shiru's VGM Music Maker. This video serves to document an example of the SSG-EG effects from Maker failing to register correctly while playing in foobar, despite sounding true and clear as intended in sound exported from Maker itself. It is not meant to dock anyone for any particular intrusions, but moreso to provide clear evidence that some songs created in Maker might not work or sound right in foobar. I may produce a video later showing some of the audio mishaps I've come across since making covers for this channel. Until then, take care!

The original MIDI was drastically changed to the point where it served mostly as a reference point for this arrangement. The lead was just a single square wave, there were only three instruments and a drum track, and much of the MIDI was just way off from the Nov. 1993 beta. Does it sound a more like a carnival to you?
Changes: - Tempo: Slowed tempo to 113 bpm to more closely match beta - Organ 1: Instrument changed from Organ 2 to Organ 1; restored original rhythm and notes - Synth Bass 2: Completely redid notes to match beta - Square Wave: Split Square Wave into E. Piano 2, Clean Gt., and Synth Brass 2 - E. Piano 2: Restored original notes; added Delay effect to final section - Clean Gt.: Restored original notes; plays during Section B - Synth Brass 2: Acts as slight delay echo to E. Piano 2 during Section A - Fantasia: Added new track to restore beta square wave notes - Drums: Restored sections A & C rhythms; restored missing toms during section B fill

I love this demo song. It's just so fun to me. My dad enjoys getting keyboards, whether or not we actually need them. But this sound module has been with us for a good long while, and of course I liked listening to this song. I recently looked it up, and decided to try and deconstruct it. All MIDI data was recorded directly to Waveform 12. That data was then output to my dad's PSS-480 to record each stem (you might notice some white noise hissing). When all the instruments are playing together, it's a live recording of the demo directly off the PSS-480. That tiny pause between loops is also faithful to the module, in case you notice. I didn't realize how long the deconstruction would be until I rendered the audio! But I hope you enjoy it!

I'm working on a semi-accurate recreation of Melee's Break the Targets! music. I invested in the Roland Sound Canvas VST and realized I could give this project a try. I'm learning from the experience, perhaps for the distant future.
How does this WIP sound? Obviously, changes are coming, so what am I missing? What sounds off? Do you think an instrument needs changing? Let me know!
In the meantime, here are some things I plan to work on: 1. Change jazz guitar (CH 9, comes in ~0:14) notes, probably to more closely match the clavinet. The clavinet's notes should be fine. 2. Determine the correct drum kit. It sounds okay right now, but I think the hi-hats are different. 3. Add/change drum pattern to be more accurate. Currently copy-pasted from Part 1 to Part 2. 4. Fade in the ocarina (CHs 1 & 2) and the strings (CH 8) when they appear. 5. Determine if strings also need changing, but they sound okay. 6. Heavily modulate French horn 2 (CH 7) at certain points. 7. Create downard glissando for French horn 2 notes in intro. 8. Adjust the chorus level on Piano 3 (CH 6).
Further changes near the end of the project will include mastering, panning, and mixing. Currently I'm focusing on getting the correct notes in place and choosing the closest instruments.

_____________________________________________________ I wanted to make an original track with the Genesis sound hardware in mind, so this casual, easygoing melody became the result. It's nothing groundbreaking. I just thought it'd be nice to get something out like this. Particular attention went to the rhythm of the song. The bass, the guitar (which was taken straight from Sonic 3's Special Stage music), and the drums all have a different rhythm to account for, making for what I think is a catchy beat. The silly melody, the nonsensical song title, and the overall theme is just a little goofy. I had fun with this little project. Thanks for listening!

Next, I decided not to use DualPCM for this cover because it didn't seem necessary. And thanks to Kyle for consistently telling us the day of the week.
I hope the music isn't too intrusive. I'm a bit of an amateur at this, so let me know! This video took the better part of a week to set up and figure out. The reason I included the Gran Turismo song is a short story. I was looking for the BumbleKast song by Coda to potentially use, but I eventually ended up looking through the master list for "music". on one of the old BumbleKasts, Kyle said that one of the best songs of all time (as he considers) is "Moon Over the Castle" from the Gran Turismo series. So, if it feels kinda strange that it's there, there's my reason. Enjoy!

_____________________________________________________ My first experience with Ape Escape was 2. I got used to the soundtrack there, not knowing how the first game sounded. It was much later, when my brother got 3, and a friend told me how similar the music was to the original. I grew to really like 1 and 3's music, but I still like the epic sound of some of the tracks in 2. They sound much more like video game music, I think, than Terada's work (I understand the intent).
I decided to use SegaPCM here because I just got overambitious with the Genesis chips. Too much orchestra and percussion to put on that hardware unless the song gets majorly arranged, and I strangely didn't feel like cramming all I could on it. So I just changed the chips early on.
Anyways, enjoy!

I'm just glad it wasn't a remix of Metal Sonic's theme, since I decided to pick that one up this time. Its melody isn't the most iconic, but it still got in my head enough for me to make this cover! Hope you like it!
_____________________________________________________ I got to appreciate this theme through Mawde Wile's channel, where he first did a challenge video on Sonic Boom then made a video on neat things he found in it. He brought attention to some of the music in it, and I decided to take a listen, leading to this cover. Probably not the most iconic-sounding song for Metal Sonic, but I thought it was neat enough.
Since this song is clearly orchestral, I was worried it wouldn't translate very well to the Genesis sound. But I suppose I managed, since I think it sounds good. The instruments were meant to be a little more orchestral this time, as a result. Thus, it sets this song apart from all the other Metal Sonic songs and Genesis-style covers out there. I decided to just go traditional and do the regular five FM channels, DAC, two PSG tone channels and one PSG noise channel this time. No real experimenting this time, but it was a breath of fresh air. Have a good one!

And I finally get to hear one of Carlos' compositions in a retro video game setting, which I guess I've wanted for a short while. Still have to play through Attorney of the Arcane, which he composed for...well, if I plug any more, I'll trip a breaker! Anyways, the aim of this arrangement was to change up the style just enough to sound like a Genesis original while obviously keeping the main melodies. Out of any of the songs that play, this one has stuck with me. It really feels like a turning point, when you're entering the most dangerous territory and attacking the enemy bases (FYI, space aliens are the enemies of this game). Enjoy!
_____________________________________________________ I'm a sucker for chords with a 7th, no matter if they're major or minor. That's likely why this song has stuck with me. I was surprised to learn that the SNES track only uses 6 channels. The SNES has 8 DSP channels, if you don't know. Then I thought that it makes sense to compose music for 6 channels and leave the last two for things like bullets and explosions, since they will constantly play in this game. BUT! That means that I didn't need to cram those extra channels into this cover, since the YM2612 chip only has six FM channels to work with. I'll let other people worry about the bullets and the explosions. There's not much else to say here. The bass sounds nice. I used the DAC this time, since the samples I have sound similar to the SNES percussion. The original track does use orchestra hits, which can't be replicated on the Genesis, so I had to compromise on that. And the horns are vastly different as well, to give that iconic Genesis feel. Overall, I'm satisfied with this, and I'm finally at ease for finishing this cover after the song swam in my head for years!

_____________________________________________________ As you may have noticed, this is an FM channel-only cover using the YM2162 chip. I started this cover on VGM Music Maker, and it was in a rough spot for a while. Finally, I decided to restart work on it using Furnace, and it went much more smoothly, not to mention my increased experience with the medium. I managed to completely exclude PSG channels, using one channel for drums and two channels for a four-part harmony. Going back to my first try...man, it was icky. But I'm much more pleased with this release! The hardest part was fitting in everything, of course. That didn't deter me from finding a way, but I am sad I couldn't include one last instrument from the original song, that being the bongo-type percussion throughout. Still, I think it sounds fine as is. Maybe I'll try to make some covers in the future with only five FM channels! Hmmm... Anyways, enjoy!

Ape escape is something special. This song just exudes a calm feeling, like you get to rest from the daily ridiculousness of the world and the constant barrage of monkey-capturing.
_____________________________________________________ A couple notes on this one. First, as I mentioned, the bass is a super low frequency, so you may not be able to hear it in decent speakers. Second, the drums are separated in the visuals because I thought it'd be a neat touch. They do not represent a stereo output and constitute a DualPCM mix in the original file. This cover uses DualPCM and Extended Ch3. I'm learning to use Furnace now, as I pointed out to AshKirby a couple months ago. I figured I'd test its limits with a Genesis cover of Ape Escape's Time Station. I think it's decent, but I wasn't going to spend much more time on it. Turns out I'm busy with school, like most other channels have to push through. And that is the reason why I didn't create a unique thumbnail for this. I apologize, but it takes more time. I might do it in the future, but I make no promises. Anyways, I am satisfied with how this cover turned out. I'm sure someone with a more experienced hand could make it better or even remix it stylishly. If you want the .vgm and see if it works on real hardware, I'd find that interesting. He is training to become a Squid Knight by participating in local battles. He wields the sword and the bow, but how does he fare against higher ranking opponents? _____________________________________________________ Yeah, okay, I'm hopping on the bandwagon. I find this meme so funny, it became an itch to come up with something on my own. Considering the last Splatfest was Legend of Zelda-themed, this approach didn't seem too unrelated. Regardless, I am happy with it. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do! All the Splatoon footage is mine.

I whipped this up in a day after thinking about it for a week. I thought SiIvagunner would have first dibs, but I ain't seen the channel put one out like this yet. So I guess I'll do it myself. Have yourselves a fun!
P.S. Not sure if I should do a Bonetrousle version of this. I kinda did it to get something done and out there for my own sake. I've started so many music projects that I'm burning myself out while finishing nothing. Oh well.

He had asked me to write a few OSTs for his game Cross the Road, which he presented for a school project. I accepted. I wrote a few tracks, which my friend incorporated into his game. Then he off-handedly challenged me to remix it and place it as a mod into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. What can I say except, "Challenge accepted." I remixed it into this song, which I call Street Rufflin'. Enjoy!
_____________________________________________________ Once again, I show a touch of inspiration from Yuzo Koshiro. The actual original song was basically half a rip-off of Go Straight, and some of those elements carry over here. I tried making this rendition more unique, including some custom instruments and the special use of CH. 3. This was a fun project, and I'm happy to present it. I'd be glad to listen to feedback in the comments! Keep on rufflin'.

Despite sticking with me for a long time and always coming back to my memory, I don't hear of people remixing it often. I guess I'll offer what I can to the Genesis remixing scene. Enjoy!
_____________________________________________________ For some reason, I had the hardest time getting a proper .wav file of this song. Whenever I exported the .vgm of it, some instruments - like the super wavy synth your hear throughout the song, or the more powerful snare drum - would completely break. Mind, this happened on every single .vgm player I could get my hands on, and some sounded worse than others. The only reason I export the .vgm is because VGM Music Maker, for some reason, only allows the PSG channels to play at about half the regular volume (plus they look nicer in foobar). Anyways, enough whining. It seems that Shiru had something really special in this program, because somehow everything works and sounds just right to me.

(headphones recommended)Ape Escape 2 - Gadget Trainer (YM2612 + SN76489 Cover)Kalokes Mysteries2023-01-01 | Just kidding! Haha, so I decided to push this one up, as all I needed to work on was the thumbnail (I say that, and then realize that I spent way too much time on just that), after which came the shock that I hadn't even rendered the video yet! So, here it is, one last cover before the end of 2022: a true Genesis/Megadrive cover of Ape Escape 2's Gadget Trainer! Hope you like it. And happy New Year!
_____________________________________________________ Last time I covered this, I used the common Genesis soundfont that gets used around the block. Now that I'm at least a little more proficient with an actual tracker - Shiru's VGM Music Maker - I've taken the challenge of redoing that original arrangement into something that's console-viable. And I think it loses way less than I thought it might! Keep boppin'.

Sorry that the last video of the year that I decide to post is yet another meme, and I have no excuse for that. I DO have several remixes that I've been working on and fine-tuning, as well as an original that I would like to publish. So if you're waiting for stuff like that, I appreciate your patience.
In the meantime, if you like memes, even then this is kinda low-effort, but it doesn't look like much Splatoon has been introduced into the Steamed-verse. Hope you enjoy! And happy New Year!Super Mario 64 - Metallic Mario (Streets of Rage Cover)Kalokes Mysteries2022-10-26 | Mario on the way to stomp..... ...MR. X! But first, we need to talk about Streets of Rage universes.
_____________________________________________________ This was rather easy. It's short, repetitive, and absolutely boppin'. The instruments were already available, thanks to getting them from a Wave 131 VGM file. Plus, I got the TR-909 drum samples from a free zip file, so that was awesome. I'm also quite the fan of Yuzo Koshiro's work (perhaps you noticed it in my Smart Race arrangement), so I was familiar with his style. The organ is just slightly modified to make the second note stand out a little more. I looked up some existing Genesis remixes of Metal Mario's theme, but it sounded like most of them used a soundfont, and only one or were actually good. But, instead of making "just another Genesis remix," but with faithful instruments, I decided to remix it in this style. Hope you like it!

I hope I managed to capture that feeling, in this case. That's important to me. Hopefully you all enjoy it!
Zero art in thumbnail made by Manumar _____________________________________________________ This one was a bit harder to pull off. The choir's "ahhs" in the original is too difficult to recreate using FM instruments, so I tried mimicking them the best I could. I think it turned out just fine, with the rest of the instruments being tweaked here and there to somewhat resemble the original's, but with that Genesis feel to it. It was the little tweaks that took the most time, since most of the song is dominated by the same repeated bass, percussion, and beeps. You'll notice the use of the PSG3 channel used in its "Noise mode," which allows a more "crispy" bass sound when combined with FM. The other PSG channels are for the beeping, and only for that, so that was easy enough. Originally, I had a couple of samples for the DAC, but since I realized that not only could I do them well in FM, but they actually turned out better, I decided to scrap using the DAC and keep FM5 "pure." Anyways, I'm glad for how it turned out. I put more work into the little things to make sure it was the best it could be.

It took me a few years to be good enough to get through the whole thing (I was basically a toddler when I started playing After Dark Games). The music loop is barely a few seconds long, but it never got boring to me. Tip: A few levels allow you to collect an extra life. Dying, however, restarts the level with that life replaced with a normal collectible (green swirl). The trick is, if you collect the life, then exit the game (remember to save your progress), that life you collected will still be a part of your counter, and the extra life will return to the level, allowing for a full replenishing of your lives counter.

Tip: If you start cutting a hedge, you'll enter a an extremely slow animation. If you move in the opposite direction as you start cutting, the hedge will stay cut already, so you can go back through the former hedge, skipping this animation entirely!
