George Walker: Sonata no. 1 for Violin and Piano (1958) Josh Tatsuo Cullen 2021-09-30 | Sonata no. 1 for Violin and Piano (1958) by the Pulitzer Prize-winning Black American composer, George T. Walker. Walker gave his first public piano recital at age 14 at Howard University, an HBCU in Washington, D.C., and was admitted to Oberlin Conservatory as a scholarship student at age 15. He graduated at 18 and continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he would eventually become the school's first Black graduate. He was also the first Black instrumentalist to perform at New York City's Town Hall, where he gave his debut recital in 1945.Walker later went on to study composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris for two years on a Fulbright Fellowship, and it was during this time in 1958 that he composed the Sonata no. 1 for Violin and Piano. The "sonata is in one movement. An introduction leads into a fugal allegro. A brief piano interlude signals the beginning of the second section that is highly rhythmic and virtuosic. It concludes with a cadence prolonged by a sustained "D#" in the violin part. The next section, marked "Andante, senza misura" suggests a recitative punctuated by laconic interjections in the piano part. The final section, marked "Molto adagio," progresses to a re-statement of the lyrical material from the beginning of the sonata." Florence Beatrice Price: Clouds for solo piano (ca. 1940s) Josh Tatsuo Cullen 2021-07-09 | Florence Beatrice Price (1887-1953) was the first Black woman to have a symphonic composition performed by a major American symphony orchestra when the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed her Symphony in E Minor in 1933. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and received degrees in piano and organ at the New England Conservatory in Boston in 1906. In 2018, she was inducted into the Arkansas Women's Hall of Fame and honored by the Arkansas State Music Teachers Association, the same organization that had denied her membership due to her race when she was living there. Using Synthesia to learn to read sheet music, using Bachs B Minor Minuet (Tetris Theme) Josh Tatsuo Cullen 2020-12-14 | Synthesia is a music learning app/game often derided in piano teacher circles for teaching kids the wrong concepts about music. I argue that Synthesia can be used as a legitimate tool to aid in note-reading, and I demonstrate how it can be used to learn the Minuet from Bach's B Minor French Suite, made famous in the video game Tetris for Game Boy (youtu.be/knLI56-WAzc)When the "falling notes" function is turned off and the "sheet music" function is turned on, the app provides valuable guidance and immediate feedback, and it practices with the student with a built-in metronome function. Mozart: Is it wrong to play a short appoggiatura in the opening of his D Major Piano Sonata, KV 311? Josh Tatsuo Cullen 2020-12-11 | Most pianists play a long appoggiatura in the 4th bar of the opening of Mozart's D Major Piano Sonata, KV 311, based on a quick search I did on Spotify. Last week, a video of a young pianist playing this with a short appoggiatura appeared in a closed Facebook group for piano teachers, and a number of teachers complained about the appoggiatura being too short. In this video I argue that appoggiatura lengths should be based on the context of what the pianist has decided the musical phrase to represent. In other words, let your musical storytelling guide your choice. I explore some different possible scenarios. What do you think?
