About Above The Law
The West Coast hip-hop group from Pomona, California, Above the Law, formed in 1989 to create one of the most era-defining groups in rap music. Members included Cold 187um, KMG the Illustrator, Go Mack, and DJ Total K-Oss. In the early days of their career, they became closely associated with N.W.A. and the rise of gangsta rap. An early signing to Eazy-E’s Ruthless Records, they helped pioneer the G-funk sound before it became mainstream. On Tommy Boy Records, the group released their 1996 record Time Will Reveal featuring “Endonesia”, “100 Spokes”, and “City of Angels,” and Legends album in 1998 with “Adventure Of…”

TKA is a Latin Freestyle/Dance-pop trio hailing from New York City. The name TKA comes from the initials of the three original members - Tony Ortiz, Louis “Kayel” Sharpe, and Angel “Love” Vasquez. Considered by many to be the “Kings of Freestyle” (though the group rejects this label, as “there are no ‘kings’ in Freestyle”), the group got their start in an East Harlem church in the early 1980s. From that church, they would go on to become one of the most prominent Freestyle acts of the 80s and 90s and this behind-the-scenes footage shows the band performing, in the studio and around their NYC neighborhood.

Gwen Stefani cited the song as the reason she recorded her solo debut album Love. Angel. Music. Baby., after she listened to it while the band was on tour.
The song hit #2 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Chart in 1987.
