b. US Air merges with Piedmont (US Air eventually merged with American Airlines in 2015. Piedmont Airlines still exists as a small regional airline in Maryland, but the Piedmont brand is used by American purely to protect the trademark)
c. Caesars World takeover (Martin Sosnoff eventually dropped this bid after a court ruled that his offer exceeded federal limits on the amount of debt used in a takeover)

44. Allegis (Here is a simplified version of a long story wrought with failure but by 1987 UAL [the holding company that controlled United Airlines] had purchased Hertz, Westin and Hilton. On April 30th, 1987 UAL changed its name to Allegis...for some reason...and in the process merged all of these brands under one umbrella. Their stock collapsed over the following months and by June of 1987 CEO Richard J. Ferris resigned and the board of Allegis divested all of its non-airline subsidiaries. By 1988 the Allegis name was dropped and they went back to being UAL)
