During the California Gold Rush, miners relied on a strange but powerful fire starter known as the “8-Day Stinker.” These sulfur matches burned hot, lit easily in the wind, and were trusted by the old Forty-Niners in rough frontier conditions.
In this video, I recreate the 8-Day Stinkers using modern strike-anywhere matches and demonstrate how Gold Rush miners packed them into waterproof match safes along with tinder. You’ll see why this forgotten fire-starting method still works today — and why it earned such a memorable nickname.
