Bebella | 8 BRAZILIAN BOOKS THAT WERE TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH | Latinx Heritage Month @bebella9005 | Uploaded September 2020 | Updated October 2024, 3 hours ago.
In the month of August, I reread a few Brazilian books in their translated english versions so I could tell y'all about it! Here are 8 Brazilian books you could pick for latinx heritage month (or any other time of the year, for that matter!)
.
T r i g g e r W a r n i n g s / C o n t e n t W a r n i n g s
Here are all the tw/cw I could remember/that I know of for each of the books. Take care and stay safe!
The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão - rape, death from illness, marital rape, sexism/misogyny, abusive relationship, fatphobia, pandemic (spanish flu), alcoholism, racism, mention of death of a character's children (maybe miscarriage as well, but I'm not sure), father absence (paternal abandonment).
The House in Smyrna - abusive relationship, rape/sexual assault, cancer, death of a parent (cancer), torture, depression, suicide, death from illness, miscarriage, murder.
Where We Go From Here - homophobia. One character's HIV+ status is outed. Also general prejudice/bigotry towards HIV+.
Perfect Days - stalking, kidnapping, false imprisonment, rape, murder, abuse. One character becomes disabled and has some ableist thoughts.
Crow Blue - torture, death of a parent (cancer), suicide, abortion (illegal abortion, and sequelae derived from it), some racist language (use of the term ind*an when referring to indigenous people, and some asian slurs - both, unfortunately, way too common in Brazil) and ableist language? ("schizophrenically" is used as a description once).
Daytripper - death of a parent, death, one chapter includes a murder followed by suicide, and another has a brain tumor.
These next two, I read 2 or 3 years ago. These are the tw/cw I remember:
Symphony in White - child molestation, rape, murder, suicide, harrassment
The Unedited Diaries of Carolina Maria de Jesus - starvation, poverty, father absence (paternal abandonment).
