“I’d been told the cancer was in my pelvis, and there was no way to get at it all,” Lowry recalls. “Dr. Tward kind of chuckled and said, ‘Oh, you’d be amazed where we could go.’” Dr. Tward then told Lowry about a promising new treatment from a recent study, which Lowry agreed to try.
“I had such confidence that I was in the hands of a really good doctor who is a really good person,” Lowry says. “And I had confidence that the treatment I was getting was the best treatment that can be offered. That gave me peace. I began thinking maybe I’m not actually going to be dead in the next five years. Maybe I will see some grandchildren being born.”

Colorectal cancer is a disease where cancer cells form in the tissues of the colon or the rectum. Colorectal cancer screening helps prevent cancer and find cancer early, when it is easier to treat.
Huntsman Cancer Institute and University of Utah Health recommend that adults should start screening for colorectal cancer at age 45.

Huntsman Cancer Institute and University of Utah Health recommend that all women receive a breast cancer screening (mammogram) every year starting at the age of 40.
A mammogram lets doctors detect:
-breast cancers,
-benign tumors, and
-cysts
Often mammograms can show these before they can be felt by hand or through touch.
Talk to your doctor about what cancer screenings are right for you. Screening recommendations may be different for women at higher-than-average risk and women who have a family history of breast cancer. Women who are at a higher-than-average risk may need additional screening exams.

If you have any signs and symptoms that do not go away or get worse, you should see a doctor to find out what may be causing them. Do not wait to feel pain before seeing your doctor. If cancer is not the cause, your doctor can help figure out what the cause is and treat it, if needed.
